I had an embarrassing moment on an international WhatsApp group when I referred to a Toyota SUV as a Jeep. Pls why do Nigerians call all 4by4 Jeeps?

Same reason they call detergents "Omo", all seasonings "Maggi", all diapers "pampers"....... Etc

They were all Jeeps before JEEP - the motor company copyrighted the name.

SUVs are Jeep.

Because of Rambo movies, Commando & Chuck Norris movies (war films), which were so popular at the time. Most suvs used in them where Jeeps (Wilys MB). The jeep stuck to us for anything that wasnt a saloon or sports car. Thats what i believe, i may be wrong.

Cos thats what everyone understands. Its just like shouting phcn, some ppl still never adapt,na still nepa bill. Lol. Do u have minerals. Yes ok. Give me pepsi

I've noticed that too... In fact, I noticed that several years ago. It started with one of my very ignorant kinsmen who kept on referring to my brother's car as a "Jeep" when it clearly wasn't one.

And when you try to point out their little error to them, they either:

1. look at you funny

Or

2. dub you "Mr know-all".

It is what it is. I still can't wrap my head around why they do that though(to answer your question that is).
