The Nigerian Civil War (also known as the Biafran War and the Nigerian-Biafran War) was a civil war in Nigeria fought between the government of Nigeria headed by General Yakubu Gowon and the secessionist state of Biafra led by Lt. Colonel Odumegwu Ojukwu from 6 July 1967 to 15 January 1970. Biafra represented nationalist aspirations of the Igbo people, whose leadership felt they could no longer coexist with the Northern-dominated federal government. The conflict resulted from political, economic, ethnic, cultural and religious tensions which preceded Britain's formal decolonization of Nigeria from 1960 to 1963. Immediate causes of the war in 1966 included ethno-religious violence and anti-Igbo pogroms in Northern Nigeria,a military coup, a counter-coup and persecution of Igbo living in Northern Nigeria. Control over the lucrative oil production in the Niger Delta also played a vital strategic role. With increased British support, the Nigerian federal forces launched their final offensive against the Biafrans once again on 23 December 1969, with a major thrust by the 3rd Marine Commando Division. The division was commanded by Col. Olusegun Obasanjo (who later became president twice), which succeeded in splitting the Biafran enclave into two by the end of the year. The final Nigerian offensive, named "Operation Tail-Wind", was launched on 7 January 1970 with the 3rd Marine Commando Division attacking, and supported by the 1st Infantry division to the north and the 2nd Infantry division to the south. The Biafran towns of Owerri fell on 9 January, and Uli on 11 January. Only a few days earlier, Ojukwu fled into exile by plane to the Ivory Coast, leaving his deputy Philip Effiong to handle the details of the surrender to General Yakubu Gowon of the Federal Army on 13 January 1970. The surrender paper was signed on 14 January 1970 in Lagos and thus came the end of the civil war and renunciation of secession. Fighting ended a few days later, with the Nigerian forces advancing into the remaining Biafran-held territories, which was met with little resistance. After the war, Gowon said, "The tragic chapter of violence is just ended. We are at the dawn of national reconciliation. Once again we have an opportunity to build a new nation. My dear compatriots, we must pay homage to the fallen, to the heroes who have made the supreme sacrifice that we may be able to build a nation, great in justice, fair trade, and industry." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1Gtbm3OMb8 Visit the Biafran War archives https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCYw7G2tSe02dBGZErJl-2Rg/videos

The writer in outlining the causes of the war left out other Six overt important factors that triggered the war. 1. The Igbos Mocking the north after assassination of their top political and military figures by the 15 January coup plotters who were conspicuously solders of eatern enclave. 2. Hijacking of the government by Ironsi after the aborted 15th January coup. 3. Deliberate attempt by Ironsi, the beneficiary of the 15th January coup to impose Igbo hegemony in the Nigeria; 4. Ojukwu recalcitrant position and subsequent unilateral declaration of republic of Biafra. 5. Ojukwu misconception of Awolowo statement that should the East allow to secede the West would follow up. 6. Nigerian determination to ensure the indivisibility of the country. 1 Like |

A war Nigeria will forever regret fighting. The factors and sequence of events leading to this senseless war is what Nigeria is grappling with today in a more worst form.Buhari's nepotism and islamization have divided this false contraption of a nation among many other factors. 2 Likes |

gawu1: The first three all points happend more than one year before the war, so how could they have started the war? I dont know if the first point started at all. Why did Ojukwu declare Biafra? He did so because Gowon went back on the agreement they both signed in Aburi, Ghana. Nigeria has stayed one but has become a total failure. It shows that Ojukwu was right to have fought for his people to leave Nigeria |

And for everyone to know that the end of the Civil War was divinely Orchestrated by God himself the bloody War ended on the 15th of January 1970 exactly 4 years after the National breakout of Violence and bloodshed started by the first blood Coup on the 15 th of January 1966 In Nzeogwu’s speech announcing the bloody Coup to the Nation the Word “ death “ was used 9 times and for the next 4 years that was all that the Coup produced The Sons of Perdition may decide to Insult themselves but Gods Truth has been Spoken |
