The technology for blocking Twitter doesn't belong to Nigeria. She is only renting it and will be paying $250,000 per hour till it decides to unblock Twitter. Do you think it's worth the cost? I don't want to believe country that isn't credit worthy to be borrowed money could be penny-wise pound foolish.

MalcoImX:You don't understand that Twitter's major source of revenue is through adverts, and how much does Nigerians spend on Twitter ads compared to the amount we spend on Facebook? Twitter ad started just last year in Nigeria. Twitter's server will rest from Nigerians' tweets that isn't bringing in as much money as countries like South Africa, Kenya, and other countries outside Africa. |

abes:NetBlocks is a global internet monitor working at the intersection of digital rights, cyber-security and internet governance. They've got the internet monitoring tools/software. It's like an online calculator. E.g. if you input 2 + 2 in an online calculator, answer = 4 It's the same with https://netblocks.org/cost/ |

abes:Read the first paragraph in my first post. The technology to block Twitter doesn't belong to the Nigerian government. It's rented. And it is being paid for. Tu compris ? Let's say you create a software that can successfully block websites from countries, any country that wants to block a certain website will contact you to help them block it, and you will charge them per hour or per day, etc. So Nigeria is paying $250k per hour to the website blocker |

Okoroawusa:Almost all of Twitter's revenue - about 85% of it - comes from advertising on its site. There are three main ways for a company or an individual to advertise on Twitter: by promoting a tweet that will appear in people's timelines, promoting a whole account, or promoting a trend. Nigerians just started giving Twitter money last year or so, and compared to other rich countries, Twitter's ad revenue from us is still negligible, unlike Facebook which we have been accustomed to. |

IjapaTiroko:This is false. To block websites, all you do is tell the ISPs to deny service to specific links and it is done. Companies also do it on their internet where they restrict websites people on the internet can visit |

ojun50:Seun hasn't implemented the strategy to make Nairaland be more than a Nigerian thing. Nairaland has the platform to accommodate all English speaking African countries. This will mean restructuring Nairaland as we know it today to be something more African. Nigeria's economy will stop dictating Seun's revenue because he will be earning Rands, CFA, etc rather than sneaking Google ads at the bottom of the page If Seun can contact me sha, I will draw a blueprint for him |

Did they build it? If they didn't, do they get it for free? The BVN & NIN technology, was it built in Nigeria or did we get it for free? How do you think Israeli software companies make their money? Isn't it through payments from softwares they built? Get more knowledge hombre: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/12/8/nigerias-defence-agency-acquires-spy-equipment-says-report |

IjapaTiroko:Me new here? You are funny, check my profile registration date. You don't need a special software to block an IP address. Blocking is as simple as an ISP adding IP address to a block list on its server. |

Mynd44:HOW COUNTRIES BLOCK CONTENT by Electronic Frontier Foundation There are various methods used to block content online. Government actors can block or tamper with domain names, filter and block specific keywords, block a particular IP address, or urge online content providers to remove content or search results. Often, governments rely upon commercial software to do the job for them. Products readily available on the market for use in homes, schools, and libraries have been used in several countries. Though the export and sale of these tools is generally legal, it often raises questions of human rights and corporate social responsibility. Some countries, such as China, use a combination of the aforementioned techniques, by pervasively blocking keywords, foreign websites, and urging companies such as Google to remove certain content. Others, such as Morocco and Egypt, take a minimalist approach to content blocking, by filtering a certain selection of URLs. The level of transparency in content blocking also differs from country to country. Some offer block pages that explain to users that a site is blocked (as well as, sometimes, why it is blocked) and/or means of challenging a specific site block, while others re-direct the user to an error page; before the fall of the Ben Ali regime, for example, Tunisia famously redirected users to an HTTP 404 error page.
