Why Nigerians hate Igbo, by Chinua Achebe
Achebe

Nigeria’s foremost novelist Chinua Achebe wrote that Nigerians, especially of the Hausa/Fulani and the Yoruba stocks, do not like his Igbo ethnic group because of the southeast’s cultural advantage

He made this claim in his book, There was a Country, which has generated controversy for his onslaught on the role of Obafemi Awolowo as the federal commissioner of finance during the Nigeria civil war. He accused Awolowo of genocide and imposition of food blockade on Biafra, a claim that has drawn rebuttals and contradictions of emotional intensity from some southwest leaders and commentators.

He observed that the Igbo culture’s emphasis on change, individualism and competitiveness gave his ethnic group an edge over the Hausa/Fulani man who was hindered by a “wary religion” and the Yoruba man who was hampered by” traditional hierarchies.”

He therefore described the Igbo, who are predominantly Catholic, as “fearing no god or man, was “custom-made to grasp the opportunities, such as they were, of the white man’s dispensations. And the Igbo did so with both hands.”

He delved into history with his claim, asserting that the Igbo overcame the earlier Yoruba advantage within two decades earlier in the twentieth century.

“Although the Yoruba had a huge historical and geographical head start, the Igbo wiped out their handicap in one fantastic burst of energy in the twenty years between 1930 and 1950.”

He narrated the earlier advantage of Yoruba as contingent on their location on the coastline, but once the missionaries crossed the Niger, the Igbo took advantage of the opportunity and overtook the Yoruba.

‘The increase was so exponential in such a short time that within three short decades the Igbos had closed the gap and quickly moved ahead as the group with the highest literacy rate, the highest standard of living, and the greatest of citizens with postsecondary education in Nigeria,” he contended

He said Nigerian leadership should have taken advantage of the gbo talent and this failure was partly responsible for the failure of the Nigerian state, explaining further that competitive individualism and the adventurous spirit of the Igbo was a boon Nigerian leaders failed to recognize and harness for modernization

“Nigeria’s pathetic attempt to crush these idiosyncrasies rather than celebrate them is one of the fundamental reasons the country has not developed as it should and has emerged as a laughingstock,” he claimed.

He noted that the ousting of prominent Igbos from top offices was a ploy to achieve a simple and crude goal. He said what the Nigerians wanted was to “get the achievers out and replace them with less qualified individuals from the desired ethnic background so as to gain access to the resources of the state.”

Achebe, however, saved some criticisms for his kinsmen. He criticised them for what he described as “hubris, overweening pride and thoughtlessness, which invite envy and hatred or even worse that can obsess the mind with material success and dispose it to all kinds of crude showiness

He added that “contemporary Igbo behavior(that) cab offend by its noisy exhibitionism and disregard for humility and quietness.

'' Nigerians'' hate igbos? Where did the statistics come from? I think it's overstretch, igbos are one of the most travelled tribe, with business all over the country, anybody who hates an igbo person doesn't hate the tribe but the individual. If you are resourceful and humble, no one will look down on you. I think the problem most people have with some igbos is their loudness and domineering nature.

As long as you mind your business and respect other tribes culture and traditions, you will be fine. Nigerians are generally nice people, however very sentimental especially with religion and tribe, once we do away with this two, things would be fine. Progressive nations aren't religious or tribal, they are based on capacity, once Nigeria starts operating based on merits things will be fine.

Secession won't solve all the issues, as minorities in middle belt and SS would have serious issues. Everyone needs to come to the round table for this nation to move forward. 2023 is here, but I doubt if much will change

cool

A logical and sensible human would ask the so called Nigerians that hate him for their reasons

A dull chestbeater would first assume someone hates him, then go on to talk less of others and their culture just to praise himself and accuse everyone else but himself

I was interacting with a 12 year old chap, when he spoke of his displeasure of Ibos, and I was very curious to know why from his single decade in life experience, then he went on to explain his experiences buying things from ibos, from ordinary phone charger to many more dubious trades that ended up getting him in problem

Hatred for Igbos runs deep in the @Elrufai family as well and if Nasir El-Rufai ever becomes President, what the Igbo are suffering under General @MBuhari will be child's play. Under Buhari, at least it is 97% versus 5%. Under an El-Rufai, it will be 100% versus 0%!

Truth is achebe tried to simplify the problem

Truth is Nigeria is a complex mix of capitalist and socialist with few Communist

Unfortunately socialist are more and capitalist are few less than 40% but we are forced to practice capitalism because of American

Socialist see capitalist igbos as aggressive , rude , domineering ...that's all they complain about the igbos ...they hate igbos but don't honestly know why but the hatred is deep ...but they still do business with the igbo man even with the hate ...reason why British said igbos are victims of their own success

Yoruba are in a unique situation because they are 50;50 that's why there are yorubas that get well with igbos the capitalist the ones that are not really into politics except for few like makinde , obasanjo n the rest .... tinubu n most Yoruba Muslims are socialist reason they hate igbos

Fulanis are extremely socialist in nature reason I was suppressed igbos loved yaradua ....Benin and ijaws are socialist reason they like igbos the least ..esans , idoma , anionmas , ishekiri , akwa cross are mostly capitalist reason they roll well with igbos

Ikwerres , ekpeye n owerri are the few socialist igbos ...the other two deny being igbos but owerri can't really

Honestly it's a complex mix

For a socialist capitalist scatter the order of things , they are rude , they challenge Norm ( socialist call this domineering ) , they are loud etc ...

For capitalist socialist are lazy , not smart , holding capitalist back , dull , etc

Untill we understand each other we can't solve this conflict

Achebe just like must of his brothers was a runaway coward who died abroad living as a vegetable. The father of revisionist history and lies, he couldn't hide his hatred towards the Yoruba's and our greatness. The dullard failed to understand that chestbeating and blowing hot air and not substance will only give you more enemies. Today, by what metric is the sub human flatin0 race ahead of the yorubas.

Igbos aren't domineering for sake of it, they hate failure,! They rejected General Buhari because he is a complete failure, not because he is a Northerner. Yar'adua was a Northerner from the same state as Buhari, yet Igbos gave him 90% of their votes. It betrays your lack of intelligence for you to accuse people who build houses and businesses outside Igbo land of being domineering
