Germany started controlling the whole game from late first half down to the final whistle, but Deschamps was so careless to leave benzema on the pitch to defend their lead for 85mins.

Its not about pressing them from the beginning, the game is about to finish so it is wise to sub in a player and that player shouldn’t be a striker when you already leading and playing against Germany.

The coach knows better. Me personally, i would start benzema ahead of giroud because of his workrate on and off the ball. Giroud is a stationary forward unlike benzema who is dogged and hardworking

Even Dayokanu aka Raumdeuter knew Benzema has always been a useless striker, long time ago.

You've said that Germany started controlling the game much earlier than the dying minutes. That is true. But perhaps that in itself partly explains why Benzema stayed in for as long as he did.

Germany's hold on the game kept getting stronger by the minute. But I don't think it truly became a one way traffic till the lattter stages of the game, when France became confined strictly to defense and counterattacks. Leaving Benzema on - up till the 60th minute as you keep mentioning - wasn't necessarily a bad decision, cos Germany's defence became more and more susceptible WHILE France still had a fair amount of control of the game. At that point, France were doing both attacking and counterattacking in fair measure. Bemzema can lead the attack when the team has possession, and he can contribute valuably on the break as well. What's more, Benzema's mobility advantage means he would contribute more to defense that Giroud would.

But when it became a strict case of attack vs defense, by then it made little sense to bring in Giroud. Instead, introducing Tolisso to add steel to the midfield and aid the defence was a smarter move, as was the later introduction of the pacy Dembele.

France were defending a slim lead, Germany cranking up the pressure and with minutes left on the clock, it only made sense to bring in Tolisso to add steel and fresh legs to the midfield, and then bring in Dembele to add pace in the attack in the case of a counter.


If France were chasing the game, I'm 150% sure he would've brought Giroud on.

But yeah, agenda must agend.
