About writing on tech, I recently applied to a website to write on tech as an intern to learn the ropes, anything on how it's done would be greatly appreciated.

Send me a DM so that I can know how far you have gone.

Web development. Desktop applications aren't profitable because of how easy they are to pirate. A lot of companies are moving to the cloud now. Even adobe has cloud versions of its popular software. You can use the same languages and tools for web development to do desktop development. If you know javascript, you can use electron to do desktop applications. I might be wrong though.
I need your comparison between Web development and Mobile app development

Stay on course with programming by hook or by crook.

You can't go wrong with coding. It pays serious cash.

Have a friend who started a dev career after our first degree while I jettisoned back to med school. Dudes in Germany now banging fresh white pussy while I'm here struggling with ASUU strike.

Copy writing. Digital marketing. Data entry and all that stuff might be easier to get into but they don't have the solid career path nor the financial reward that comes with coding.

Struggle to get a laptop that can do the basics right and drown yourself with all the coding tutorials you can find. Stick to this and you'll thank me in 2 years Max.
That's if you're intelligent and smart of course. Coding needs a smart and analytic mind.

Thanks so much for this!
I'll take need to your advice...

Brush up on the HTML and CSS and see if the laptop will run JavaScript. If it does run JavaScript you can pick it up but I don't know if it will run any JavaScript framework as those things start to consume a lot of memory when you code. If you know HTML, CSS and JavaScript you can look for remote roles as a HTML email developer. Add pardot or HubSpot to it. You can continue to react when you have gotten a new laptop.

There is a market for HubSpot on Upwork. The OP can start by taking courses on HubSpot and start right away once he has completed the fundamentals of JS.

Also I researched about pardot and hubspot and was seeing certifications here and there grin
Is it compulsory to be certified?

Can I freelance with it on the likes of upwork??

You need the HubSpot certs. Most are free and will take you only 2-3 days to finish a module depending on the number of hours you spend on it daily.

HubSpot is pretty wide tho. I once did some stuff with it and focused on the API aspect and not the CMS thing

You're right about Electron with JS.

Web is pretty wide. Lots of tools and lots of frameworks... It's very good to have web skills.
However, the enterprise market can never do away with Desktop apps. Guess why? They are actually more secure.
Apart from being able to control OS APIs, desktop apps can be built to do very specific tasks that are tied to a computer. Features that browser apps cannot even dream of yet.

So if the OP wants to quickly specialize, desktop is a shortcut. He just have to be good and learn it well.
Then he has to add Backend and Database stuff with it later so he can Fullstack

Thank you, you are not wrong about electron. I read about it somewhere. The second question please, are web apps the same as website? This usually confuses me.

Even at the enterprise level, a lot of things are moving to the cloud. Salesforce is cloud based. SAP is also moving to the cloud now.

I am "the Nigerian boy"..... Lol

Hahaha
What a coincidence, from Reddit to Nairaland

You're doing great bro!

And your Upwork threads are educational

I apologize for referring to you as " Nigerian boy". I think it sounds somewhat derogatory.

Please I have a question regarding Upwork's direct contract. Does Upwork still collect their 20% fee when using direct contract?

Thanks man. I'm glad I could help!

For the name, no need to apologize....I actually love it grin

Now, for your question, Upwork can't collect 20% fee when it comes to direct contract....when they are not mad angry angry.

They only collect 3.4% of the paid money as fee for using their platform. I explained it well here:

That's all you need, actually. In tech nobody cares for your degree or background. Its only a case of can you do it, have you done it before, and do you have samples of previous work (portfolio)

So yeah, you can learn coding without a computer science background.

I can’t verify my upwork, I use an iOS device and the app requires linking my LinkedIn. Fiverr rejected my login detail because I can’t access my old email for verification.
What’s the way forward abeg.

First of all, I'm proud of you for actually choosing the hard path of being a freelancer. It's going to be a tough journey, but you can do this! I have no experience with udemy, but if you really want to start ASAP, the best courses are probably anything related to content writing.

Contrary to what you believe, you don't need to be an expert at something to write about it–although that would be a definite bonus if you were. You just need to be able to explain it in a way that your target audience can understand you. Basing on your interactions with the other commenters, you have a good command of the English language for your writing! I highly suggest you choose something you're really interested in and try to search popular places like LinkedIn, Upwork, or Fiverr if there are any available positions for your specific niche.

Being a freelancer only takes confidence. I began as a freelancer 10 years ago and I did not know what I was doing–I just had the confidence to pitch to clients. That's what gets your foot in the door in the first place. I mainly ghostwrite because it has the highest income potential for my niche (Coaching & Business Consulting) and one of the things that you will probably not need now but will further down the line is to improve your "brand"–which is you.

I like making my email pitches to potential clients really catchy, I make sure my invoices are sent on time and look professional (I also have it automated to remind a client of the deadline), and I also create my own contracts because I specify add-ons to an agreement where I can use a ghostwritten piece as a part of my writer portfolio. This all adds to the brand I have as a professional ghostwriter.

Another thing, whatever niche you're trying to get into, you need to have background knowledge on SEO. I specifically work on B2B SEO so I can recommend this guide to you, but SEO is generally a really wide spectrum and the internet is a breeding ground of tons of helpful information, you just need to weed the BS ones out.

These are things that I learned in 3 months and mastered in 10 years. If I did it without enrolling in a course, you can probably do it with the resources you have. Good luck!

I'm also a mathematics graduate. I did a 6 months data science internship last year so I can tell you that the data science/analytics field is very wide. To be able to offer the skills online, you need to be very good in it and that would take you a significant amount of time.

If you are serious, then chat me up on WhatsApp so that I will direct you on how to get free Datacamp subscription for two months so that you can get started with learning. Just my little way of helping smiley

I am in same dilemma now.
1.I learnt html, css and was still at basic js when the laptop was withdrawn from me.
2.I completed the Google digital marketing course.Though it is basic but I have access to udemy courses.
3.I am left with an old hp mini laptop (has manageable issues)

Should I continue learning web dev with this mini laptop (brush up on html and css, continue js) ?? OR
Should I learn digital marketing??

Ps:
-I rely on my parents as an undergraduate.
-Coding is my goal for the future.

Don't give up on your programming career/journey.
If you feel tired and burnt out, rest, but do not quit.
I pray the gig market favors you.
