Bureau De Change operators enforce rules across Nigeria

Central bank seeks to close forex arbitrage opportunities

Nigeria’s authorized currency traders’ association is asking its members to sell their stock of dollars in an attempt to narrow the spread between spot and illegal market prices.

The Association of Bureaux de Change Operators of Nigeria has asked its members not to hoard foreign currency , Aminu Gwadabe, president of the association, said in a text message. A group of officials have been checking on compliance in cities across the country, he said.

Dealers hoarding dollars may be barred from the central bank’s foreign-exchange auctions, people with knowledge of the matter said. The naira, which plunged to a four-year low of 505 a dollar on Monday, gained 0.6% to 490 on Friday in the unauthorized market, according to abokifx.com, a website that collates the data. It opened at 411.58 a dollar on the nafex window also used as the official rate by the central bank.

Panic Reaction

With inflation at almost 18%, many residents of Africa’s biggest economy have been accumulating foreign currencies to protect their wealth, often buying dollars from illegal traders. The demand in the parallel market distorts the exchange rate, according to the the Central Bank of Nigeria, and has prompted it to take steps to narrow the spread.

“We advise, and warn our members in particular, and the public to desist from any behavior of speculation and hoarding,” Gwadabe said. Such actions “will definitely lead to a very big collateral loss,” he said.

The central bank sells $10,000 each to over 5,000 dealers twice a week at 393 naira while they are asked to sell to customers at 395. That’s a 90 naira discount to the street rate, creating arbitrage opportunities.

A central spokesman said the lender is taking steps to block arbitrage opportunities resulting from the gap between the official and parallel markets.

Commercial banks executives also agreed to increase dollar supply for end users in a meeting that held with Governor Godwin Emefiele last week. With the arrangement, lenders can provide the greenback at the official rate of about 410 to 412 naira to reduce demand pressure on the streets.

Africa’s largest crude producer devalued its currency thrice since March last year as lower oil income, which accounts for about 90% of dollar earnings, put pressure on external reserves.

Why is BDC Licenses issued only to Northerners?

I have applied for the license twice and twice CBN rejected. Is it only Northerners that are qualified to launder money? hoard money? or sell money? Now I have my strategy, and I do not need una License no more.

Southern Nigeria Republic must not repeat this in our coming new country.

The only way to achieve this is for the Federal Government to hands off exchange rate fixing and allow the private market determine its worth. You can't have a parallel market and not expect such.

I know this high exchange rate is man-made considering all that the CBN and FG is doing.

Some people deliberately hold up dollars to cause scarcity.

these people are also in government.

Another Pattern of Blame Game.

Hoarding which dollars? Where them see the dollar hoard? If they can hoard the dollar doesn’t it mean that there ain’t enough dollar in the market? Or how does one hoard an ubiquitous commodity?

I don’t blame this government at all, na monkeys here wey still dey celebrate 1 point in a million goof they make I dey blame.

The crop of people who make up the these government, can never succeed with all these shenanigans in another continent, the defense they put up on their failure is too flimsy for even an elementary student to buy.
Africa is one big docile cesspit.

I believe some Southerners own BDC licenses, plus banks sometimes sell forex...and most banks are owned by Southerners.

You are assuming that just because a forest contains a few pines, therefore all the trees in the forest must be pines.

In a capitalist economy, this is more like telling a fellow business partner how to run their business. And how much profit ratio they should make; if that is how CAPITALISM is being instituted then we wouldn't have billionaires like Dangote, Dj Cuppy's father, Adenuga and my humble self.

The Nigeria present economy has caused her currency to be so worthless that when you eventually save up to your first one million in Naira (after many years); you will technically be on the same level with a 22 year old who just graduated college in America, gainfully employed and had just begun to work and earned for less than 6 months — Meanwhile, your one million in Naira can't even last you one year (after rent payment) if you decided to retire.

Following my statistic:

1- Tell me who wouldn't want to hoard the U.S dollar (as a financial instrument) in hopes to trade it for more Naira in the future.

2 - Show me a rich person who wouldn't want to save and maintain their networth with a stable currency rather than a fluctuating currency.

3 - Show me the local companies and start ups in Nigeria that are always sourcing for Naira to trade with their counterparts outside of Nigeria.

Last time i read from an unverificable source — Dangote is perfecting plans to set up a cooperate office in New York USA. This is a move to protect his money worth value and to lure investors after the completion of his refinery.

Now, Are you still wondering why people like my friend Mallam Danlandi, my business minded neighbour Papa Ejike and my versatile mechanic Egbon Kazeem are all hoarding the U.S.D?
