This is not a big deal, bro. Guests (people without a registered Nairaland account) can view this thread. So it is possible that the guy had been reading the thread without having an account, but decided to create one so as to table the case here.

Well, this can't be said enough but a new account is not necessarily an indication that the person behind it is a fraud. There are social butterflies on here who can't bring themselves to sell their stuff with their main and would rather create an alt to do so. I say this because I bought a laptop from someone of that nature before.

As a matter of fact, a fellow who was a reputable exchange seller with an old account now has his name in the directory of scammers' list on Nairaland. I was almost scammed by him even after doing repeated business with him. It wasn't until he got wind that I wanted to involve the EFCC that he refunded. Today, he is a bonafide fraud, having scammed someone.

However, most scammers on here (to the best of knowledge and based on what I have noticed) scam people by claiming to be far away from the potential buyer's location. Hence, would request a pay before delivery option rather than the inspect and pay option. If the former is the case, ALWAYS;

1. Run a background check of the mobile number (use the Nairaland search feature or just paste and search on Google). Request a name, their account number and run them on True caller, Nairaland and Google. If it doesn't match, RUN.

2. Request an escrow. It high time this thread had its own escrow services. Based on trust and popularity, I SUGGEST ANYONE who intends to buy from a seller who isn't close by could contact WESE90. I have used him for my escrow services so many countless times and the peace of mind that come with how he handles the service is exceptional.

Here's how escrow can help:

A. The escrow creates a WhatsApp group; seller discloses the condition of the product; buyer understands, agree and proceed. If FULL DISCLOSURE isn't given and buyer finds out after taking custody that the item/product is not as described, he or she can return the item and pull out of the transaction, with Wese.90 or other trusted escrow provider as a witness.

B. In the event that the seller does not have any product and intends to scam unsuspecting buyers, they won't embrace the escrow option and would rather block you the moment you suggest it.

C. Escrow ends the day you take custody of the product/item. There's no window or grace period to test the item before releasing their payment.

3. If you do not intend to use the escrow service, never send money to a different account other than the seller's. Some of them are just downright demonic and wouldn't mind using their neighbours, friends, or loved ones as a shield. If they insist they want you to send to another account then it can only mean something.

4. Always watch out for sellers who claim the item to be sold is in two locations. If someone claims they are selling a TV and claims the location is Port Harcourt/Delta, then it is a obvious sign of fraud. Why they do this is largely because they do not intend to be available or close to you. Depending on where you tell them you are based, they will always choose the farther location just for you to send money first.

5. An old account does not necessarily imply trust. Scammers now register tons of usernames, leave them to age before dusting them for use. There is a notorious scammer in the webmaster section who does this. If it is old and activities on the account are low, then it is a fraud. If it is newly registered, it could be an old fraudster trying his luck again or some popular Nairalander who want to sell under anonymity.

6. Again, run account numbers, names and phone numbers through Nairaland and Google if the seller isn't popular on here.

A friend just told me you don't need a police report for them to do that first. It's only a proof of the transaction made from your account that will be needed immediately, while you present a police report & a court order if eventually necessary to recover the money

I went to my bank to complain was told to go to his bank, the customer service lady I met didn't attend to me like it was a serious issue issue, she made it look like it was my fault, I never get the guy time sha he won't go free even if na next year I get my money back or I make his life a living hell
