Emmanuel Macron was slapped in the face Tuesday by a man who had waited to meet him during the French president’s whistlestop tour of the southeast.

But he’s not alone when it comes to rough encounters with the public. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and round up other moments in which political leaders defended themselves, one way or another, in front of their constituents — and the TV cameras.

NICOLAS SARKOZY

The former French president didn’t back down when he became involved in a heated exchange at a farm show in Paris in 2008.

Sarkozy was making his way through a crowd when he placed his hand on the arm of a man, who was not pleased. “Don’t touch me,” the man said, “you’re soiling me.”

Sarkozy wasn’t having that and hit back with “Casse-toi, pauv’ con!” How to translate that? Well the BBC went for the rather polite “get lost, you bloody idiot.” Reuters went with “dumb ass.”

The French phrase now has its own Wikipedia page. Sarkozy was earlier this year convicted of corruption (unrelated).

JOHN LESLIE PRESCOTT

Words can hurt, but let’s move on to punchier stuff.

John Prescott was Labour’s deputy prime minister when he made a stop in the Welsh town of Rhyl while on the campaign trail ahead of the U.K.’s general election of 2001.

Prescott and his team got off their bus across the street from the theater they were heading toward, unaware the short journey across the street would go down in history as the “Rumble in Rhyl.”

Prescott was flanked on both sides by people lined up to see him, while protesters could be heard shouting from a distance. One of the men in the crowd (displaying a heroic dedication to the mullet hairstyle) waited for Prescott to get close before hurling an egg at point-blank range. Displaying (hitherto unknown) lightning reflexes, Prescott launched a punch that would have made Floyd Mayweather proud, before the bodyguards jumped in.

Following the incident, some Conservatives called for Prescott’s resignation, while members of the Labour Party claimed he merely defended himself.

HELMUT JOSEF MICHAEL KOHL

In 1991, it was German Chancellor Helmut Kohl who got egg on his face.

Kohl oversaw Germany’s reunification after the fall of the Berlin Wall, and won big in the first post-unification election after promising economic prosperity. During a trip to the former Eastern German city of Halle, he was accused of being a “liar” by members of the crowd, moments before eggs started flying.

In video footage, the Chancellor can be seen breaking away from his bodyguards and running toward the crowd, seemingly trying to confront his attackers.

The present Chancellor Angela Merkel started her political career as Kohl's protégée and was known in the 1990s as "Kohl's girl"; in January 1991, he lifted the then little-known Merkel to national prominence by appointing her to the federal cabinet.

GEORGE WALKER BUSH

In 2008, almost six years after announcing his decision to invade Iraq, then U.S. President George W. Bush took a trip to Baghdad during which he held a press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Bush’s remarks were interrupted as he dodged behind the podium to avoid a shoe that had been thrown toward him from the crowd. Then another.

With each shoe came a statement. The thrower, later identified as journalist Muntadhar al-Zaidi, shouted “This is a farewell kiss, you dog!” in Arabic, followed by “This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq!”

Both the journalist, and his shoe, became cultural symbols in the country, receiving widespread praise.

Proving that slaps in the face aren’t reserved for presidents is former French Prime Minister Manuel Valls. In 2017 while campaigning in Brittany against Macron, Valls was given a slap (although not as forceful as the one Macron received).

Valls went on to press charges against the assailant, an 18-year-old far-right protester, to show that “violence is always unacceptable.” He eventually lost the race to Macron, but the decision to punish the young man marked a turning point for his campaign, allowing Valls to show a more combative side and get voters’ attention.

Following the incident, the man who delivered the slap said he considered running for president.
