James' case is a bit of a curious one. I remember last season, he was making waves mostly because of his attacking play, with his crossing ability in particular catching the eye. That was the period when the Beckham comparisons came up (comparisons strictly in terms of crossing). I remember how fans used to blast the attackers for failing to utilize the fantastic crosses/cutbacks James played into the box numerous times.

Then, what many people weren't convinced about was the defensive aspect of his game.

So what could've happened? The back passing is undeniably obvious, and a bit frustrating at times. But when he does attack, he is a joy to watch. And the defensive side of the game that used to generate doubts, is now one of his biggest strengths.

James has the tools to become one of the very best in the game. Forget hype. Last season, his attacking play made the headlines. This season, it's his defense. I think he needs to find a balance, as he's now proven that he can attack AND defend.

Again, some have highlighted his physique as a sort of an issue. First off, this dude is mad strong. But then again, it seems his size/mass makes it difficult for him to zip up and down he flanks. If that's the case, then it's definitely something he can work on.

Me I still maintain faith in James, though he needs to address some issues.

In all honesty, The attacking thing you speak of; I never saw it. All I saw was James being pretty good at crosses. In terms of final moves (as a winger or wingback) in the box like a Marcelo, Alba, Hernandez, Alonso or even Carrasco, He is/was lacking.

These things would have been easier to Ignore if he was an excellent defender which he's not as he suffers from lapse in judgement and can be a bit casual at times
