Even if Messi were to go down, we'd take solace in the fact that he was one of the consistently best performers, if not the best, in the tournament; that he was a genuine bright spark throughout and not a passerby merely waiting to statpad with penalties.

Messi could never be as toothless as Cristiano today if he were in this Portugal team. Without penalty, the Baba was absolutely useless , just as he was against France if not that they stupidly decided to be generous with his favourite dish.
