What I am about to write about is something that has stayed on my mind for 5 years.

My Mother’s Death

My mother died in 2016 as a police officer in Lagos. We travelled all the way to Ondo state to bury her. After her burial, many of the family members promised us that we would be taken care of with my 5 siblings because our father was not available.

Aftermath

After we got back to Lagos, our family members stopped picking our calls, nobody came visiting, my sisters and brothers had to drop out of school and stopped going to school. We had to put them in a public school.

After 3 months, a friend of my mother visited us and after everything, he asked me if I knew that my mother had a land? Land? I was shocked and I inquired further and found out that my mother had land that we could sell because it has now appreciated.

Our Savior
To cut the long story short, we sold the land and ever since, I have opened a hair selling business that we are using to feed the family.

My Question

Why do parents buy land and not tell their children?

Congratulations first for being able to sell the land and do something meaningful with it.

Back to your question, most African parents believe death will come during old age hence they tend to keep information like this hidden waiting for the right time.

You should be grateful to you mom's friend that brought your knowledge to the said land.

My mind is telling me that there are other landed properties to your mom's name but the said friend wants the rest.

Most time’s, maybe you and your siblings aren’t matured enough to know about such story. This Is why I tell people to buy landed properties from companies that will give you documents. When I bought my land I. 2020 from landwey, I have all the documents and my children know it too just in case

Well some do it to surprise family members

Some do it because they don't want the children or spouse to know yet

But the good thing is that, someone must know about it, that's the person she is free to tell

Because of bad mind of people, some people does things in secret so that the result will speak out

My own be say make una no f**k up like Nigerian youths. Landed properties are the biggest inheritance to bequeat to offspring.

My boss once told us about these landwey people, and advised staff to patronised them.

The guy was very coded and his phone and wallet vanished at the scene. Police eventually returned his phone but one of his friends took it and returned it formatted without any record in the name of opening it( the deceased password his iphone). Anyways, she's doing fine now.

Some times it is always good not to tell your children about their land, except may be they have built it and living in it....

Some parent feels if they tell african children about their properties, they feel that entitlement and become lazy, like yes my parent has alot of property...

Maybe she didn't feel it was important to let you know yet. Nobody wants to die prematurely so when it happens, they take a lot of secrets along with them.
