Take note of the fact that the entire Argentina team immediately ran to Messi when the final whistle blew.

I might be speculating here, but I genuinely think that the entire team played their asses off for him just as much as they did for their country. Messi has carried Argentina time and time again in basically all major tournaments in the last decade. And time and time again the team has let him down in crucial moments. Hell, even in this tournament he was directly involved in 9 out of Argentina's 11 goals. I, for one, think it's fucking poetic that in the final game of this Copa America the team finally carried him for once to earn him his first international title. It's like a belated thank you for all his years of putting the team on his back.

Grande Messi. This was a long time coming.

Maradona never wanted anyone to eclipse his legendary status in Argentina. He was envious of Messi. He was happy Argentina kept losing the finals. He always liked Ronaldo. I hope he's seeing this from his graves.
