Actually, you are right. The Ballon D'or recently assumed more prominence from about 2010 till date when it was merged with the Fifa World best award. After the separation from Fifa Best award in 2016 thereabout, the Ballon D'or retained its prestige and gained precedence over the Fifa Best as the Ballon D'or winner is now seen as the World best player for that year.

People don't realize that Modric was consistently delivering strong performances in the 2018 UCL campaign and La liga. Before the WC, I remember we were already saying he was the major backbone for CR's scoring feats that season. His individual performances were noticeable and impressive. At the world cup, he also pushed a lowly rated Croatia to the final with strong performances while Mount was lost among the sea of English performers never mind England's much more stellar cast compared to Croatia's. Jorginho did not even really stand out for me both in Chelsea and at Italy. Being good is not the same as being outstanding.
