Over the years, we have seen some of our southern chiefs embarrassing their people in the north. Either out of inferiority, gluttony or sheer foolishness, they keep bowing to the northern chiefs. If they don't bow to you, don't bow to them. Respect is reciprocal. The way you see yourself is the way others will see you. There is no law that says you should bow to northern chiefs or answer their obnoxious summons. Challenge is welcome when necessary, you are not their slaves. Every chief is equal provided you have your people under you. Bow to your people, not another chief. It dispirits your people seeing their chief bow to another chief he considers "superior." We the people feel bad and inferior too when it happens and we can't take it anymore. They won't respect or your people if you don't respect yourself. North and south are different protectorate or countries, don't bow to any northern chief. Your people only deserve your bow. |

Hiss. You are a liar without picture. By the way, the emirs o, the southern traditional rulers o, they are small in the scheme of things. Local chairmen are bigger than them. President o, governors o, based their actions on advise from their political associates not from traditional rulers. |

Many of them are ignorant of the truth that the only first class King in the entire North is the Emir of Kano. The Sultan of Sokoto is more of a Spiritual and Islamic Supreme Leader not really a monarch. |

ogaemma: Am sure you missed out on Nigeria people and culture or history in school otherwise you will know that as the North is concerned Emir of Kano wasn't and isn't the only number one not to talk of other none Hausa/Fulani Kingdoms eg. Kwarafa, Kanem-Borno etc. The Sultanate during Uthman Danfodio established the current emirate system and by extension the Sultanate. It controls each kingdom after a conquest of most part of the Hausa states in Northern Nigeria and beyond by Uthman Danfodio. The Sultan after each conquest nominated and installed his own commanders, loyalist or supporters as Emirs and Sarki of the conquered states. The current conquered areas now have emirs etc. They recognize he's there superior except for some places in the North East(Borno,Taraba etc) and North central(plateau,Benue etc). The Sultan is a senior to an Emir in the religious configuration. Sultan controls an equivalent of an empire. Lastly religious leader is often referred to as uztaz ,Ulammas or Shiek. Compare it with the UK ,Queen Elizabeth and the Anglican church . As a political leader some leaders are also seen as protectors of religious norms. Not necessarily as religious heads above other institutions as church or mosque or the roles of Bishops or Imams etc. The Emir or Sarkin Kano will handover his seat anyday to the Sultan to sit and he knows that. They don't even contest that seniority because of there history and how they all got that position.
