MOSCOW — Syria's air defense forces shot down seven out of eight missiles launched by Israeli warplanes during a raid that targeted the Syrian province of Aleppo, the Russian military said Tuesday.

Rear Adm. Vadim Kulit, the head of the Russian military's Reconciliation Center in Syria, said that four Israeli F-16 fighter jets targeted facilities southeast of Aleppo in Monday's strike.

Kulit said seven of eight missiles launched by the Israeli fighter jets were downed by Syrian air defense units that used Russia-supplied air defense systems Pantsyr-S and Buk-M2. One missile damaged the building of a scientific research center in Safira, he said.


A Syrian military official previously said in remarks carried by the state news agency SANA that Israel carried out an aerial attack in the Aleppo province late Monday. He said that Syrian air defenses shot down most of the missiles in the attack that occurred just before midnight.


The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor that has activists on the ground in Syria, said the Israeli strikes targeted weapons depots that belong to Iranian-backed militia operating in Aleppo's Safira region. The group said the strikes were followed by loud explosions. The weapons depots were located inside Syrian military posts, the group said.

Israel has launched hundreds of strikes against Iran-linked military targets in Syria over the years but rarely acknowledges or discusses such operations. Israel fears Iranian entrenchment on its northern frontier, and it has repeatedly struck Iran-linked facilities and weapons convoys destined for Hezbollah.

Russia has waged a military campaign in Syria since 2015, helping President Bashar Assad's government reclaim control over most of the country after a devastating civil war. Moscow also has helped modernize Syria's military arsenals and train its personnel.

Israel's only saving grace is that Russia has a soft spot for them due to their Jewish population at home. The S-400 that some fools were bragging about 'bypassing' was never intended to bring Israeli planes down otherwise those F-35s wouldn't even go near Syria.

The US DoD even complained about Russia equipment painting all of its planes in Syria.

A NATO member going for the S400 against all odds is a testament to it's capability. You need to see how the US and Turkey were fighting each other over who should keep and study a Pantsir S1 short range defense system captured in Libya from a based abandoned by Hafter forces few months ago. Russian Defense systems are highly craved workaholic assets. That's a fact.

Of course, but the scenario now is quite different from what it used to be. Then, it was just Syria who has to deal with the threats. But now, Russia for the first time has apportioned some of its own armaments used by it's military to the Syrians, and the effect was immediate. For the first time since the Israeli forays, the BUK 2 system used by the Russian army was employed against an enemy threat and it downs 98% of the missiles fired by the IDF planes. That is a HUGE game changer. Believe me, nobody wants to go up against the Russians in the sky over Syria. The Turks knows this, the Americans knows it, and Israel probably knew it long ago. I won't be surprised to see Netanyahoo resuming his frantic trips to Moscow to make sure the bear isn't antagonized further. The last thing the IDF wants now is to be on the opposite end against Russia in the Syrian conflict. It would be a catastrophic miscalculation.

The Russians are two decades ahead of the west in rocket technology. No one disputes that. Even if Israel and America work together, it would amount to very little in achievement because while they are playing catch-up in this area of armaments, Russia is already set to field the S500 that can shoot down low orbiting satellites while the S700 is already in the pipelines . It's a hopeless game of chase they can never win.

I disagree with that though. Israel's arrow3 missile system can shoot out moving satellites at excess of 2500km. It is jointly funded by US and Israel. Problem is Isreal has refused to disclose its source codes making it difficult for America to integrate those systems into her defense system.
