Helios must be crying everytime they read Equity Bank

The Nairobi office of James Mwangi offers a sense of the expansion plans harboured by the chief executive of Kenya’s Equity Bank. A string of flags — Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo — adorn the entrance, highlighting his push to make the bank the region’s leading financial institution.

“We are now the largest bank in Democratic Republic of Congo, the largest bank in South Sudan, the second-largest bank in Kenya, when you go to Rwanda we are ranked number four and Uganda we are number six,” he says.

“I have no doubt we will be the second-largest bank in Rwanda by next year, and probably the third-largest in Uganda. So essentially, we have made Nairobi the region’s hub.”

Equity is the second-biggest bank in Kenya after KCB, which has also expanded abroad, but analysts see Mr Mwangi as more aggressive in his overseas push. “Going to DRC, which is a French-speaking country, is a good test of how we could perform in French[-speaking] regions like [in] west Africa,” Mr Mwangi says.
We all know how Nakumat was expanding across those region, while cooking figures as well and making those claims " we are the largest in ..." , I am very sure the real truth of your banks will be known soonest.

And this list is very old - Equity total assets has almost doubled - and KCB has crossed 10B. See some of the recent acquisitions - and remember to chuckle a little - when you Access Bank Nigeria bought crap for 1.4B ksh grin

Counting by country, in the top 80 African banks by assets, are the following:

Algeria-5 Ivory Coast-1 Senegal-1
Angola-4 Kenya-10 South Africa-7
Egypt-7 Mauritius-5 Sudan-1
Ethiopia-4 Morocco-7 Tanzania-2
Gabon-1 Mozambique-2 Togo-1
Ghana-3 Namibia-2 Tunisia-1
Rwanda-1 Nigeria-14 Uganda-1

10yrs ago - it was just one bank - see Kenya is growing on STEROIDS but you don't listen
. You will wake up when Kenya overtake Nigeria in less than a decade (real uncooked GDP). You cannot GDP - because by then Kenya banks will bigger than Nigeria smiley amongst other indicators;

Equity already laid down the gauntlet - 100M customers by 2025- and 25B dollar in total assets.

Rmbr 2004-06 when the West was on Kibaki like he attempted to assassinate Bush and kidnap the Queen? A cuz in law with the CBK had a group meeting with Mwiraria after his return from Washington for a WB one on one. Apparently, they wanted our financial system-ALL our banks! They were insisting he approve the sale of NBK,(rmbr their liquidity issues?) and the majority of KBC. Family and Equity were yet to make their appearance so they'd have owned our then undeveloped banking system lock, stock and barrel.
Ofc,Mwiraria and Kibaki told them to FK off and barely a month later the Anglos decided upon Kenyan regime change-we've never seen the avalanche of Western hostility even in the worst of the Moi era, which was truly a terrible time as all Kenyans here rmbr. We'd have been permanently FECKED!?

You sound embittered. Yes quickly expanding companies have that possibility of burning out like Nakumatt did. As for Equity that one phenomenal bank that is being studied in IVY leagues. From position 66 out 66 in kenya to now the biggest bank in East and Central Africa.

The ranking based on the 2020 end year financial results acknowledged the lender's asset growth which hit over Sh1 trillion, becoming the first bank to reach such margins in East and Central Africa.

Equity's total assets are valued at Sh1.015 trillion, followed by KCB Group at Sh987.8 billion. NCBA Bank is third with total assets as of December 31, 2020, standing at Sh527.6 billion followed by Co-op Bank at Sh464.5 billion.
In 05 I talked to some KBC directors-they were uniformly unimpressed with Equity and Mwangi saying his internal systems were mainly ishyt, specifically his admin and HR and tbh imo there was some trith in that statement. A decade later Muranga graduates would be paid 20% higher than Nyerians or Kiambu people!
He underpaid most of his people and at this period it was almost a running joke;so many employees were cloning cards: anyone going to the Nairobi CID fraud office would overhear new cases of Equity employee f'ery!

Those days - biggest banks - were usual suspect - and they hired expats (white) - a lot has changed now - not only have they been routed to no 7 and dropping out the top 10 - now they dont dare hire non-kenya - and the same is true for other multinationals. I remember when Barclays hired Adan Mohammed as their CEO - it was a big deal. Kenya made a big turn around 2005 - and if we keep at it - for another 15yrs - we will in another level.

You should be the last people in this platform to talk about quality.
I doubt if nigeria is in top 20 in road quality index.
