Chelsea's German head coach took over in January and led the club to a European triumph the previous season. There was almost surely a moment on Thomas Tuchel's journey from Paris to London in January when the German thought about what was ahead for him at Chelsea. After a poor run of form, the Blues had recently let go of a club legend in Frank Lampard. They were ninth in the Premier League table, but only a few points off of a place in the Champions League.
Chelsea had set a goal for Tuchel to finish in the top four. And the 47-year-old – who previously managed Borussia Dortmund and started the 2020/21 season at Paris Saint-Germain – did so with a little help from Tottenham Hotspur on the final day of the Premier League season. In the Champions League, however, all expectations were dashed. The Blues advanced to the final after defeating Atletico Madrid, Porto, and Real Madrid. Chelsea met Manchester City in the final, and a goal from Kai Havertz guaranteed Tuchel and his team were crowned European champions.
"I don't know how I started so well," Tuchel said in an interview with UEFA ahead of Wednesday's Super Cup match against Villarreal.
"Previously, I would have said it's never an ideal situation because you come in [midway through the season], but perhaps it was a good thing. Finally, I discovered a well-structured club, a fantastic organization, a very open and ambitious team, and a lot of high-level support, all of which made things very easy for us. [Playing with a back three] was a terrific match for all of our players, especially our midfielders. We decided early on that two of our three midfield players – N'Golo Kante, Jorginho, and Mat – should always be on the pitch," Tuchel explained. "That's the approach: do what's best for the club and what suits the players' personalities."

Tuchel will have another chance to add to Chelsea's trophy cabinet on Wednesday night. The Blues are the clear favorites to beat Villarreal, who won the Europa League last season under Unai Emery. Tuchel will have a difficult time selecting a starting XI with so many players in various phases of pre-season. The Chelsea manager, on the other hand, is adamant that the players he selects will be solely focused on winning another championship.

Tuchel stated, "I have a lot of affection for Villarreal and a lot of respect for Unai Emery. I think the [Europa League] trophy should be renamed the Unai Emery trophy as soon as possible. This man is fantastic. He's played five finals and won it four times - that's insane. They adore this game, and they play it for the love of the ball and with a great deal of genuine bravery. As a result, I believe they will approach this game with the mindset that they have nothing to lose. But what better way to start the season than with a European final; we'll take it very seriously and do everything we can to bring home the next prize."
