How does one win the Premier League? By avoiding defeat in games. How can you escape relegation from the Premier League? By avoiding defeat in games. When we look at the ten teams that have lost the most Premier League games since the competition began in 1992, bear that in mind. There are two Premier League champions on the list, as well as two teams that are not currently in the top division. Some of England's greatest teams didn't make the cut, but they should be commended for their consistency, as they haven't lost that many games since 1992.

Fulham is ranked 10th with 254 defeats.

After being demoted from the Premier League last season, Fulham is now in the Championship. The Cottagers have played in the Premier League for 15 seasons, but have failed to prevent relegation in some of them. They've lost 20 or more games in the Premier League three times, the most recent being last season. Fulham has lost the most games in a Premier League season (26 in 18/19, when they were relegated in 19th position).

Liverpool is ranked ninth with 259 defeats.

Some may wonder how the Liverpool side that won the Premier League title in 19/20 has lost so many games in the Premier League era. The reason for this is twofold: first, the Reds have appeared in every Premier League season since their inception. There's also the truth that the Anfield side has struggled for consistency, particularly in the early years of the tournament - they've lost 10 or more games in 13 Premier League seasons, and you can't win the league with that record. Liverpool has lost the most games in a Premier League season (16 in 93/94), when they finished eighth in the table.

Manchester City is ranked eighth with 276 defeats.

Modern football fans may be surprised to learn that the current Premier League champions had lost so many games. City struggled for much of the Premier League's early days, similar to Liverpool but worse, having been relegated twice from the top flight. Those days are long gone, yet City did lose 10 games in a Premier League season as recently as 2015/16. That hasn't happened since; the most games lost since then are nine in the 19/20 season. Manchester City has lost the most games in a Premier League season (21 in 2005/06, when they finished 15th).

Sunderland is ranked seventh with 296 defeats.

Sunderland is currently attempting to gain promotion from League One, however, they have previously played in the Premier League. Since the tournament began, the Black Cats have spent 16 seasons in the English top division. Unfortunately, many of those seasons were relegation fights, and Sunderland dropped a lot of points in their fight to stay in the Premier League. On five occasions, they have lost 20 or more games in the Premier League. Sunderland has lost the most games in the Premier League, with 29 in the 2005/06 season, when they finished worst in the league.

Southampton is ranked sixth with 355 defeats.

Southampton is on this list because they have a history of losing games in the Premier League. They've lost at least ten games in every season they've been in the league. With that kind of record, the team has done well to avoid relegation; in fact, they have only been demoted once from the Premier League, and it took them another five seasons to return. They'll want to avoid losing at least 10 games this season, but history suggests that they won't be able to do so. Southampton has lost the most games in a Premier League season (23 in 93/94, when they finished 18th).

Tottenham Hotspur is ranked fifth with 358 defeats.

Tottenham has been in every Premier League season since its inception, so their inclusion on the list is perhaps unsurprising. Although being so high up may surprise some, Spurs have only been at the top end of the Premier League on a consistent basis for the last ten years. Spurs have lost 10 or more games five times in the last ten seasons. They had lost 10 or more games in a Premier League season 15 times prior to that. That's a total of 20 seasons in which the team has lost 10 or more league games. Spurs are ranked sixth because of this. Spurs have lost the most games in a Premier League season (19), first in 93/94 when they finished 15th, and again 10 years later in 03/04 when they finished 14th.

Aston Villa is ranked fourth with 369 defeats.

Aston Villa has a rich history, having won the old European Cup in 1982, but in recent years they have been either at the bottom of the Premier League or outright. That explains why they are losing so many games. Villa has lost 20 or more games in a season four times in the Premier League era, which is one of the main reasons they are on this list. Villa manager Dean Jones will be hoping his club doesn't come close to that figure this season as they aim to improve on their 11th-place result last season. Villa has lost the most games in a Premier League season (27 in 15/16), when they finished last in the league.

Newcastle United is ranked third with 373 defeats.

Newcastle's position on the list can be summed up by the fact that they lost 19 Premier League games for four seasons in a row in the 2010s. The Magpies have continued to lose games since their return to the Premier League, losing at least 16 games in each of the four seasons since their promotion. Manager Steve Bruce will be anxious that the team's losing streak will continue this season. Newcastle has lost 19 games in a Premier League season, first in 2012/13 when they finished 16th, then in 2013/14 when they finished 10th, 14/15 when they finished 15th, and finally in 2015/16 when they finished 18th and were relegated.

Everton is ranked second with 393 defeats.

Everton, like Tottenham, is on this list because of their long tenure in the league - they have appeared in every Premier League season. They have, however, been in relegation trouble more frequently than Spurs, which explains their higher number of defeats. Everton has lost 10 or more league games in 25 of the Premier League's 29 seasons. They have lost so many games in the Premier League because of their consistency, yet they deserve credit for avoiding relegation. Everton has lost the most games in a Premier League season, with 22 in 93/94, when they finished 17th and escaped relegation.

West Ham United is ranked first with 394 defeats.

West Ham is the team to beat, but only by one game, Everton. During the Premier League era, the Hammers have spent time outside the top division and have suffered the greatest losses as a result of some terrible seasons. They've lost more than 20 games in a Premier League season twice and 19 games three times, for example. The good news for West Ham is that things appear to be improving; they only lost 11 games last season, and there's a decent chance that by the conclusion of the season, they won't have lost the most. West Ham has lost the most games in a Premier League season (21 in 2006/07), yet they were not relegated because they finished 15th.
