How can a mining site not be protected from the public? There should have been barriers and warning signs to help protect and warn others.
And how come they had to wait until the governor came with a crane before proper rescue was conducted? Is the governor also a crane operator or a rigger?

And why did the "rope" snap during the lifting operation? A proper lifting accessory(webbing or chain sling) should have been chosen with the capacity to lift the car.

We really need to improve on the way we do things

How Gov. Umahi Stormed Mining Site Where Vehicle Plunged Inside, Spent Over 2 Hours Trying To Rescue Victims

Governor David Nweze Umahi of Ebonyi State, on Sunday, visited the mining site where a vehicle plunged inside and a yet-to-be identified number of passengers still trapped inside.

IGBERE TV gathered that the Governor who visited the mining site where the ugly incident happened yesterday came with functional crane and spent over two hours trying to get more divers to rescue the accident victims.

Speaking with Igbere TV correspondent, a middle aged man, Mr Monday Igboke identified the vehicle as a Volkswagen Golf Car.

According to him, "the vehicle is a Volkswagen Golf Car. Since yesterday, we have been trying to recover the car but all our efforts proved abortive."

"This evening, the Governor arrived with a crane to rescue the victims but because of the deepness of the pit, divers are finding it difficult to connect the vehicle to the crane".

"There was a point the divers connected the vehicle to the crane but the rope cut and the vehicle fell inside again."

"Governor immediately mobilised for more divers to come and help connect it back so that the vehicle can be recovered."

IGBERE TV gathered that the  pit is over 36fts deep as other residents of the area appreciated the effort of the State Government for coming to the mining site with a crane to recover the vehicle.

Governor Umahi was accompanied to the mining site with his Deputy, Barrister Kelechi Eric Igwe and other top dignitaries in the State.

Story that touches the heart, what is the problem with us and leadership? Is it that we can't get anything right or what, this medicine after death approach is worrisome. Is it that the state governor was not aware of the terrible state of the road before now? Politics have occupied the better aspect governance.

The time he was using for his political permutations and defection saga that have no direct impact on the life his people would have been use to rehabilitate this deplorable road.

For it is appointed unto man once to die, after this the judgament. Death is a must. The only way out is forsaking one's sins and accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord and personal Savoiur.

They can't even stay up to a minute before the brain shuts down for lack oxygen because the lungs will rapidly fill up with water once they start drowning.

So let me get this straight...
1. Accident occured 24hrs ago
2. Governor showed up with a crane
3. Lifting accessory broke during lift supervised by an "engr"
4. Trial and error then ensued and lifting still isn't successful

This country is doomed.

The state government failed to
1. Enforce site planning for the mining company hence allowing them excavate a pit close to a public road.
2. Fix the dilapidated road, erect warning signs and effective barriers around and along the pit
3. Set up, equip and manage a quick or rapid response accident response team (see lagos state for an example)
4. Ensure the ministry(s) or commissioner(s) responsible for responding to these type of incidents or accidents are up to the task and where they are found wanting, applying punitive or corrective actions.
5. Ensure that it does not take only a state governor to mobilize a crane to an accident site!!!

This country is DOOMED.

Why won't the rigging fail when the state governor has assumed the job of a master rigger and lifting supervisor when those suitably qualified are just standing there watching him make catastrophic errors.

And to the reporter, the victims are not being rescued. They are long dead. This is a salvage operation. It doesn't even require the presence of the governor. He must be jobless to be there.

If it takes a governor arriving with a crane more than a day after the incident for an attempt at rescue.... then I think we are probably existing way beyond our rights to life and just confirms that there are several things we should stop attending to and many more things we should rather focus on.... very basic things.

You can imagine if this country faced the kinds of natural disasters others are serially afflicted with.... hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanic activity... how on earth will we survive as a nation??

Just a car in a ditch and it confounds, confuses and paralyses a whole State....
It seriously puts all our so called accomplishments as a nation in a sad context.... that we just cannot take care of ourselves, cannot secure ourselves, cannot organise ourselves, and these days unfortunately on the economic front, cannot feed ourselves....
