Once the military is defeated, the president and the office becomes a sitting duck.

For the takeover to be successful, the head of state who is the symbol of the government must be captured or killed and i am sure you know what would have happened to him if he was captured alive. So, why blame him for running away? Why should he wait to be captured alive and hanged in public when he had the chance to escape? In life, it is self-preservation first.
