Nice one OP.

I find it fascinating when a truck carrying a semi trailer is making clean turns on the road (U-turns, roundabouts, branch offs etc).

I see it as an engineering feat.

Hello guys...

So tonight, I'd like us to know about Fifth Wheels.

Have you ever wondered how a Truck head pulls a semi trailer (Maybe a tank, or a flat bed)?

Well, this is possible with what we call a FIFTH WHEEL. In Nigeria, we call it TURN TABLE.

This Fifth Wheel is usually attached to the Tractor, and then it hooks something beneath the semi trailer. That's something is called a KING PIN

So this King Pin goes into the Fifth Wheel, and then you have a complete truck like this

How do those tyres on the semi-trailer brake since they are not connected to the tractor's brake system? Abi dem no dey brake?

It hooks up the flat bed with the main tractor of the trailer,
Its the only connection, I use to have a picture of it.
Like the tractor drags the flat bed through the fifth wheel.

very informative, i know this quite well coz i work with a logistic company and normally do interchange whenever the truck have a serious mechanical fault which can't be fix at the spot (offsite) the tractor head will be unhooked and the truck liner hooked to another head.

They have independent brake systems on them separate from the main tractor,
Then there are tubes that are connected to the main tractor that supplies them with air for braking.
There are also wires that supply electricity to enable brake lights and trafficators to function properly.

Op Thanks for sharing. i keep wondering how come the tank of a truck never detaches from the truck itself when the truch is in motion. whats the techonology behind it that it fits into the fifth wheel and locks so securely that it dosent detach when the vehicle is on speed, no matter how heavy the cargo is

Thanks for this information. I personally learn say the spelling be KING PIN and not KEY PIN as I do previously.
