Contracting Nigeria workforce and bad welfare on every job is a decade achievement of NLC .

Then NLC wants to condemm us to perpetual darkness

Unless tarrifs are increased to market price, the power sector won't have the cash to fix things.

We enjoy GSM because we pay for their services at the price they charge.
But GSM market is not monopolistic like the Disco's. The market isn't competitive for regularisation. So they will still keep on dishing out crap services even if we buy for 100/KwH. Baba that your example no work at all

See they should forget about this protest. ..so long as there will be constant electricity, tariff increase means nothing after all some of us spend heavily on fuel and diesel. What they should be fighting for is for the provision of prepaid meter to all household in the country. That way, there propose hike in electricity tariff will mean nothing as consumers will minimize and manage there consumption rates effectively!

Monopoly or no, the fact remains that the price controls in the system prevent the making of an adequate profit

People won't like it if the government put price controls on their businesses to 'help poor people'

Modified

The way the power sector works now since privatization in 2013 is simple. Goverment allows private ownership of the distribution and generation arms of the sector in return for the governemt setting the price of the power they generate.

In practice this has meant that many power companies operate at a loss that they survivor by not paying their taxes .

That guy you quoted does not think cause he lacks the basic equipment for such (brain). As a matter of fact he is paid for his inability to reason. His job is to defend this government’s actions no matter how obnoxious.

Oga electricity tariffs have been hiked in the past. Did you see any improvement in supply?

They have been hiked yes , but they are still kept below the production price per kWh.

Also not everyone pays the same price for power. People living in higher bands pay close to market price. People living in lower bands pay a much lesser rate.

At the end of the day it translates to losses , which in turn fuel the sharp practices and bad management in the sector.

Before you respond, consider this, would you let goverment set your prices if you were running a retail business.? To the point that you end up selling the goods you sell below the cost you bought them wholesale?

In a saturated market that you're providing services, prices are competitive. Discos are like any other businesses whose sole aim to make profits. Why do government/politicians still procure transformers and embark on extensive electricifation projects since discos should see to whatever happens within their franchise areas? Ever wondered why 1gb of data sold for 5k in 2010 ? Yet $1= N105 then.
With the current level of inflation and FX in 2021, 200naira can get you 1gb since you used GSM operators as a template.

The clueless Government has no idea of attracting FDI's and New businesses, but rather only bent on taxing the populace on alledged claim of rise in cost, despite being in charge of the economy that gives reason to rise in cost. As if the populace are insulated from rise in cost.
I guess her current debt portfolio has made it impossible for them to access foreign loans any more, hence, the urgency to tax the populace via any imaginable medium.

You are typing trash. The market price at the moment for electricity might not be that okay. But that was essence of privatization, to free up government monopoly and improve the services, you have not improved the services yet you are asking for increments in services that is poorly rendered.
These discos guys were clearly aware about the state of decay in the electricity industry before they went ahead to buy it, they were expected to pump in serious money to repair the badly damaged infrastructure but they start recouping their investments before they're just doing piecemeal repairs here and there hoping to reap bountiful, oga, it doesn't work that way.
In your previous comments, you made comparisms with the telecom markets, at least those guys in telecom market made sure they spent serious money in improving the infrastructure before charging cost reflective tariff, that's why nobody seems to complain about them because they are rendering to some extent a 'quality' services

1. Discos are not allowed to make profits which in turn hampers their ability to pay GENCOS, pay for improvements and so on.

The key thing is price control by the goverment. Price controls imposed by goverment are usually meant to keep people happy. They aren't meant to make companies happy.

2..politicians buy transofomers because they want to get voted back into office, and a transformer provides visible proof that they are doing something

Plus because discos cannot make profits, they can't easily buy such things

3. Data cost is high because GSM companies have to make enough of a profit to expand their services and pay for improvements. Since goverment does not give then any money( and even wants to collect more tax from them)
