Beans contains both carbohydrate and protein, but carbohydrate is on the high side

Beans is not a carb. It's a protein. Though it gets converted to carbohydrate in the absence of pure carbohydrates in the body and its stored up and used for energy.

However, where there's enough carbs in the body, it serves as protein.

Thought the protein content is more than the carbohydrate content
What's all this content and percentages you people are talking about?

If you check the classes, beans comes under protein therefore it's a proteinous food. Though it can be converted to carbs by the body whenbthe body lacks carbs just to provide it with the necessary energy needed to keep us going. And there are so many things involved in this process.

In one of my posts about genetics on this forum I argued that elementary biology or science in general has only been structured to introduce the unlearned mind to the basics in a way that they find it interesting without loosing interest.
Realistically, some of what we have learned in elementary science do not always conform with what is present in nature. Not that they are wrong but truth is always complex. Note that.
.
Back to your question. The simple answer us that beans is a carbohydrate food. Combined with fibers there are about 60℅ - 75% of carbohydrates in beans and just about 25% of proteins.
.
This is why the choice of textbooks for elementary science is equally as important.
"Beans is a source if protein" would be very correct because even at 25%, beans is relatively very high in protein content.
.
However "beans is a protein" might not be so much on the right lane.
.
In comparison soya bean which has one of the highest amount of proteins in the 'beans family' has up to 36% protein and 35% carbohydrate.
.
However when you look at nature, it is very hard for any plant or food to not contain carbohydrates which are like the major components of all organic matter. This is why a percentage composition of other nutrients in sufficient quantity (relatively) regardless of their percentage composition in direct relation to that of carbohydrates, in any food is sufficient enough to say that food is rich in that nutrient.
.
The logic here is that carbohydrates are present in almost every food, so except they take over 90% percentage composition of that food, we can as well overlook them.
.
Did you know? Meat is 75% water, 19% protein and 1.2% carbohydrates....
Take my like. Very apt!

.. This is informative and enlightening, thanks for this. To think right from primary school till now I use to classify meat as fat and oil because that was what I was taught. Thanks for this once again.

grin You're very funny. That Nigerian authors have been classifying it as protein since 16BC doesn't make it correct.

Lol
I think every food contains a certain amount of every macro molecules (carbohydrate, protein, fats). Maybe our primary and secondary teachers weren't learned enough to tell us that beans is actually a carbohydrate(based on it's high ratio of sugar to amino acid). I suspect it's because most legumes generally have more amino acid content (building blocks of proteins) than sugar content ( building blocks of carbohydrate) e.g cow pea, guinea pea etc
Though it can be converted to carbs by the body whenbthe body lacks carbs just to provide it with the necessary energy needed to keep us going. And there are so many things involved in this process
Gluconeogenesis is an entire different process, where glucose is gotten through the bio conversion of non-sugar molecules (proteins and fats)

No. I meant the 'beans family' a paradoxical expression for the lay mind.
.
Of cuz' you are right but attempting to define legumes and n. Fixation and the microbes and plant physiological structures involved, then I would have had a big mess on my hand.
.
I never try to sound intelligent when m talking in public to a general audience sir. I always apply the KISS principle. (Keep it small and simple)

Legumes is one of several food classifications that was taught in primary school. What is this "lay mind" and general audience to whom you refer?

Smiles...let's put your education to test then.
Suggest why beans are accepted into the leguminous plants class.
.
'Not all beans are legumes' do you agree with this statement?

Beans contain far more carbohydrates than protein..

When you were taught classes of food in elementary school, under what class of food did beans fall?

If you even want to classify them otherwise, I think it should come under vegetables due to it's fiber content. Not carbs.

I was taught in the university that beans contain more carbohydrates than protein.

I'll go with what I was taught in the uni. Plus, I did other research too.

Scientists keep coming up with new researches everyday on end. So, don't drop your pen yet because tomorrow they'll come and tell you fruits are proteins.
