The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige, has said the rising rate of unemployment portends danger for the country.

He attributed this on Tuesday and lack of education to the problems bedevilling the country, warning that if not tackled the country might be “completely wiped out.”

The minister said this at the inaugural partnership economy summit organised by the Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs in Abuja.

The summit was tagged, ‘Translating Sustainable Development Goals to local businesses in Nigeria.’

Ngige said, “We are in trouble as a country. We are in trouble and anybody who tells you he doesn’t know we are in trouble is lying to himself and once you lie to yourself.

“We are facing a problem that is cyclic, one begat the other. It is left for you and me the elite to decide to save ourselves, save our children and save our country.

“If we keep on with these symptoms; buy ammunition, bomb these people, bomb kidnappers, bomb Boko Haram, you will be wasting resources.

“If you had prevented it, it would cost you less. We must give education to these people at the grassroots.

“Those who can’t get an education, we must provide them jobs so that they can fend for themselves. They can put a roof over their heads.”

Harping on the need to provide quality education to people at the grassroots, he said the inability to provide such was responsible for why the people were lured to partake in separatist agitations, terrorism among others.

He added, “If you don’t kill ignorance, you are breeding people would be brainwashed to believe that with Biafra all their problems will go away; Oduduwa, all their problems will go, Boko Haram.

“If we don’t tackle them, we will continue like this until this country might be wiped out completely; we don’t pray for that. We must give education to the people at the grassroots.”

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who was represented by the Minister of Trade and Investment, Adeniyi Adebayo, described Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises as the backbone of Nigeria’s economy.

That isn't a bad thing..... Nigeria will going to break anyways after the dead of the old regiment. We the youth in the North, will never take disrespect from any hothead. I believe the youth in the south will also get to be leaders in due time and poke the bear.

You complain of rising unemployment but you have championed an embargo on government recruitment for years now.

There are drastic measures to take in springing up capitalized micro and SME businesses fully funded by the private sector. The retirement age needs to be reduced across board to force out a certain age and above into the market to create jobs while they still have the energy and capital. Which leaves room for mass recruitment of a young lack of capital population to be trained younger.

The very bad Nigerian situation has already created a young generation gap of unemployed citizens, there is no way that gap would be closed without drastic measures.

E.g.. Parents A retired at 50 while still earning pension, the man started up an accounting Firm and today employes 5 graduates, The woman started up a supermarket and today employs 1 Bsc and 2 wassec graduates. Out of 5 children just 1 is under-employed because they left room for the younger generation while creating jobs.

Parents B retired at 65 while still earning pension, the man and woman both sit at their balconies listening to radio in swinging chairs with 3 out of 5 children unemployed. Because when they had the energy and capital, they held down the jobs meant for younger ones without creating any eventually.

Fashola that was so competent lost it in this administration now look at Ngige who knows all this things and yet under his ministry has supervised an attack on human capital development. Sometimes I wonder what we did wrong to deserve this kind of leadership.

Relative to income, no country has more outrageously unaffordable Bills than Nigeria, look at food inflation being 18000% since the 80s..how much has income increased? Abroad you can easily afford your Bill's when you're fully employed but in Nigeria u cant.

Am tired of hearing all these unproductive grammer's, what measure have you put in place to proffer solution to the rising unemployment?

Then, the ones employed is being mismanage e.g Doctors, ASUU and so on.
