It has nothing to do with smartness. The game was unfair. It wasn't well planned. Emma threw more bots and his bucket never fell. The rope holding the buckets weren't equally tied.

Pere asked this question before they started and Biggie said if your bucket falls at first trial and that bolt is inside said bucket, you have won. I guess WM didn't remember to check his bucket after it fell to see if the bolt was inside.
