Tom Mboya is immortalized with stature where he was shot dead in 1969 - aged 39yrs - having accomplished incredible feats from his 20s. The street was renamed Tom Mboya street.

Working with John F kennedy and Martin Luther King - he would ship 800 mostly Kenyans - to IVY league universities in the US - including Prof Mathai - who won the Nobel peace prize - and Obama father - who'd late reward the US with 1st Black President - convinced that Africa would only develop by investing first and foremost in EDUCATION.

Tom Mboya designed kenya flag and basically laid the foundation of kenya social and economic future - with Kibaki the future president - would design the Africa Socialism - sessional paper 10 - that would see Kenya grow at 7 percent from 60s through to 1980s - when IMF SAP kicked in.

Africa socialisms was based on both capitalism and communism - but within Africa context - that recognized at it core that Africa was communal - it concentrated on cooperative socities and harambees (self help) - where people would pull together to contribute money or to build roads - Harambee became the national motto - and kenyans working together built schools, hospitals, name it - not with coercion like Nyerere of Tanzania or Nkumah of Ghana - but through Africa spirit of Ubuntu or strong community.

That is what Tom Mboya liked wearing - unless he was official duty. Tom Mboya was pan-Africanist but he had no kind words for Ankara - or huts - that people were calling Africa wear or culture - while they were simply symbol of poverty. The dutch or Ankara or the Hongkong prints were not African and could not be use to define or caricature Africans.

Maybe I am wrong. Azikwe I know was in the failed Biafra war.He definitely cannot wash Tom Mboya shoes. In Africa only Nelson Mandela is top. Not because Mandela is more intelligent but because he suffered for 27yrs and still managed to deliver South Africa - only to be messed up by Thabo Mbeki, Zuma and the current leadership.

Again I encourage you to pay some attention and listen to one TOM MBOYA - arguably one of Africa best leaders- I'd would have said Jomo Kenyatta if I was looking for easy populism - but definitely Africa deserve Tom Mboyas.

On January 7, 1970, the 3rd Marine Commando Division under Gen. Obasanjo, supported by the 1st Infantry Division to the north and the 2nd Infantry Division to the south, launched their final offensive against the Biafrans. The Biafran S Division under Captain Azum Asoya was operating along the Port Harcourt – Elele road. The Division found itself cut off and disorganized due to a quick envelopment by the Nigerian 17th Brigade under Maj. Tomoye, the Nigerians now began making their advance on Owerri. On the outskirts of Owerri, Biafran Lt. Col. Lambert Ihenacho’s 63rd Brigade came under withering attack by Maj. Tomoye’s 17th Brigade, supported by 122 mm Soviet artillery. In less than a day of fighting the 63rd Brigade became overwhelmed by the Nigerian bombardment and were forced to surrender.

While the Nigerians were preoccupied with attacking the 63rd Brigade, the Biafran leadership made their final meeting in which President Ojukwu announced his plans to go abroad “in search of peace”. Ojuwku handed over the Biafran presidency to his vice-president Philip Effiong and placed all remaining Biafran troops under the command of Maj. Joseph Achuzie.

On January 9 Maj. Timothy Onwuatuegwu escorted Ojuwku to the Uli airstrip where he boarded his private jet and fled to the Ivory Coast. Immediately after Ojukwu’s departure President Effiong called for a ceasefire to discuss the details of surrender. On January 12 Philip Effiong, Joseph Achuzie, Ogbugo Kalu, and other Biafran officers made their way to Amichi and later Owerri to broadcast their final surrender to Col. Obasanjo.

It is inconceivable to me that men of good faith would try to twist world opinion in such a manner as to deceive people into believing that the starvation and hunger that is consuming ‘Biafra’ is a plot of Britain, Nigeria and others to commit genocide”.
