In 1958, at the age of 28, Mboya was elected Conference Chairman at the All-African Peoples' Conference convened by Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana.

He helped build to the Trade Union Movement in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, as well as across Africa. He also served as the Africa Representative to the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU). In 1959, Mboya called a conference in Lagos, Nigeria, to form the first All-Africa ICFTU labour organization.[6]

Mboya worked with both John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. to create educational opportunities for African students, an effort that resulted in the Kennedy Airlifts of the 1960s enabling East African students to study at American colleges. Notable beneficiaries of this airlift include Wangari Maathai and Barack Obama Sr. In 1960, Mboya was the first Kenyan to be featured on the front page cover of Time magazine in a painting by Bernard Safran.[7]

Mboya, just like all Kenyan presidents failed Kenyans and left the country with massive unemployment and poverty which is still continuing today.

They all helped in leaving Kenya with no industrial base and highly import dependent. That's the legacy of Mboya

Most industries in other east africa countries are subsidiary of kenya

Maybe I am wrong. Azikwe I know was in the failed Biafra war.He definitely cannot wash Tom Mboya shoes. In Africa only Nelson Mandela is top. Not because Mandela is more intelligent but because he suffered for 27yrs and still managed to deliver South Africa - only to be messed up by Thabo Mbeki, Zuma and the current leadership.

Again I encourage you to pay some attention and listen to one TOM MBOYA - arguably one of Africa best leaders- I'd would have said Jomo Kenyatta if I was looking for easy populism - but definitely Africa deserve Tom Mboyas.

We import medicine - we have very good medicine manufacturing for generics - outside South Africa and Egypt.
We import lots of palm/cooking oil - this is a problem and we need to grow sunflower to replace palm oil - but we re-export a lot of this regionally
We import lots of cars - this will continue for quite a while
We imports lots of machinery and capital goods - this will continue.

We do not import a lot of finished manufactured goods - we actually export lots of such goods regional - and outside - leading AGOA in apparel.

If you go to any supermarket in kenya - nearly everything on the shelf is made in kenya.
