I think Silva was 70% correct in his execution. I don't hold him absolutely faultless, I said he has little fault. He made the right decision in not engaging but I think he could have judged his distance to Bernadeschi better. There is a way he could have placed himself to rule out the possibility of Bernadeschi going for a dribble, while also being close enough to give himself a chance of cutting out a pass. He was 7 yards from Berna at the start of that move. 5 yards distance would have achieved both.

Intercepting that pass is a low probability occurrence that exposes you to a higher chance of getting dribbled there. That pass went to Silvas right. If he overcommit, the bigger danger there is setting himself up for a dribble or for Bernadeschi to cut in on his right foot and shoot at Mendy from a good range with good chance of scoring. Silvas idea was 100% right but his execution was only 70%.

I have blamed Kovacic of being guilty of the same thing, however my focus is not Kovacic. Nobody is hyping Kovacic as the best thing since sliced bread here. Silva has little fault. He is the spare man. Silva will be stupid to commit too early to a one on one with Bernadeschi being the last man. Last man does not commit to duels early especially in a 3 man defence cos if you lose a duel as last man, it is over. He would be surprised to see a ball dropping to Bernadeschi unchallenged in-between the DM and last man. The last man is insurance, and only duels if absolutely necessary, that's why I said we keep a spare man 5 yards back when playing defence. Everybody else duels and anything that falls from a duel will fall to spare man 90% of the time. If Silva had gone tight to Bernadeschi early in that sequence, Bernadeschi is open to the possibility of one dribble putting him through on goal.
