First, find people of your same level to hang around with, that can explain things in your own terms (experts explaining things over your head really sucks).

Second, get a Raspberry Pi. Start "sysadmining" the Raspberry Pi. Find fun projects. At some point, start playing around with networking on it. Explore all the fun command-line tools, like 'traceroute'. Use 'openwrt' as your home router and "netadmin" that heck out of that. Now install web services on your RPi and play around with that, watching how your web server can serve raw HTML containing CSS and JavaScript. Create your own website. Now buy a domain name and push out to an AWS server. Make a LAMP app that serves stuff from an SQL database.

Now hack your server with SQL injection. Keep playing with bad server-side scripts until you get good at SQL injection.

Play with Chrome "Developer Tools" to explore how websites construct their web pages.

Now it's time for JavaScript. Spend some time learning abstract programming language theory with JavaScript as well as practical fun with it both inside the browser ("Developer Tools" again) and on the command-line ("NodeJS".

My best learning came not from mentors, but from people my own level. They, too, can suck, I still bitterly resent that 15 year explaining 'arrays' to me in a totally messed up manner when I was 14. But it's through talking about such things that we acquire knowledge.

Truth is, OP is just name dropping. He has NO idea what a Pentester does. Zero Linux SysAdmin knowledge. Zero Kali Linux knowledge. A prospective Pentester would already have done some pre-work on all of these. I bet if i throw a bash script at OP he would be clueless

You can't test a system you don't know. Take a step to learn programming, understand system security loops

Thats not true. Programmers usually don't know much about security and mainly focus on functionality, where as pen testers care about the security of systems and less about the functionalities.
You don't have to be a programmer to be a pen tester, both lines of work depend on totally unrelated tools and it doesnt pay to be jack of all trades.

You need a foundation in programming especially the basics so you can understand how it works. I would recommend python

2. A basic knowledge in networking

3. Basic knowledge in html, asp, php and css

4. A basic knowledge on database especially SQL,
5. Basic knowledge on Linux os. After which you will select the best distro suitable to what you want.

Penetration testing comes with certification that is when you get recognized. Knowledge of python and js and bash is compulsory. Kali Linux or parrot OS Vmware or partitioning Windows and Linux, get certified with Kali. If you can't afford it find free udemy courses ... Here in the United States A pen test analyst earn between 70KUSD to 170KUSD annually.

These are places where great resources can be gotten to learn these skill set.

I'll advise you get the fundamentals down:
- networking
- understand operating systems (Windows, Linux, mac)
- understand how the web works. Learn some programming.

Then register on tryhackme.com, I'll recommend going for premium for this one (8 USD/month). Practice practice.
Have your own labs too.

After gaining some experience with tryhackme.com you can take the elearn security junior penetration tester course and cert (eJPT). Keep reading and practising. Build yourself from there. Go for some advance certs too on the elearnsecurity platform. It's also important to find internships.

But remember, penetration testing is just a tiny piece of information security.
