Over the years, the debate of who is the best player between Ronaldo and Messi has been a major topic in football. One of the major reason why this is so is that these two players have been arguably the best the game has ever witnessed. Whenever discussions about Messi and Ronaldo come up, different aspects of their game are always being talked about.


Sometimes, people talked about Messi's ability to dribble, something which Ronaldo is no longer good at. In other cases, people analyze goal scoring ability, chances created, assist made, among others, as the yardstick to judge who is better between the two players. Another fact which fans point at about Ronaldo and Messi is that Messi often score goals from outside the penalty area while Ronaldo mostly scores tap-ins, however, in this article, we will analyze why the trend will likely continue that way till both players call it a day from football.


Can we really blame most of these fans that demand to see their favorite player scoring some beautiful goals? The answer is a big NO because both Ronaldo and Messi often entertain fans with some jaw-dropping goals in the past, something that has raised the Hope expectations from both players. However, if their pattern of play in recent times is being looked at, one could see clearly why Ronaldo could continue scoring tap in while Messi keep scoring from outside the box.


For some years now, Cristiano Ronaldo has changed his system of play from a flying winger who loves to dribble all the time and cut in to his favorite foot to score to a proper striker. Although, in most of the formation his teams usually set up with, the Portuguese striker is often stationed on the left side of a front three, however as the game goes on, he often changes position and plays centrally. At Manchester United now, Ronaldo is playing as a number nine, which means he is expected to be dangerous in the box.


Messi on the other hand plays as a playmaker who create chances and also scores goals, in that case, he can shoot from afar and score goals which is why he is often score from outside the box than Ronaldo. One thing fans should understand is that football is not magic and every position on the field has its peculiarities, as such, they can't expect Ronaldo to be a number nine and still come to midfield to shoot from 40yards (36.58 m) out.

"Don't compare him, don't write about him, just watch him".

The truth behind that quote is that whatever analysis you'll come up with for Messi, you are going to miss other aspect of his game which is a disservice to him.

That is why using goals as a yardstick to determine who is better is unfair to messi.
