Hashima, also known as Battleship Island because of the shape is an abandoned island of Nagasaki, lying about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the center of the city.

In the 19th century, large deposits of coal were discovered beneath the sea and a town was built entirely of concrete by the Mitsubishi conglomerate to house the miners and their families.

Hashima is a former coal mining site with over 150,000 tons of coal yearly.

People lived on the island from 1887 until 1974.

The Island lies to the west of the Japanese mainland, at approximately 18km from the port city of Nagasaki.

It’s also known as Gunkanjima, which means ‘battleship island’, due to the resemblance.

It covers an area of 6.3 hectares.

Hashima was famous for undersea coal mining.

It was bought in 1890 by Mitsubishi and subsequently developed for the workers and senior officials with hospitals and schools.

It was one of the most densely populated cities in the world, with a population of 5,200, at its peak, living in a space equivalent to that of fifteen football fields.

However, as petrol began to replace coal in the 60s, coal mines were eventually closed in Japan.

The downturn of economic activity compelled its residents to pack up and leave the island all within three months.

Hashima has remained desolate since.

Thousands of men, women and children lived and worked on the island, harvesting undersea coal mines that powered Japan's rapid industrial rise from the late 19th century.

At its peak in 1959, the 16-acre island was home to over 5,000 people, making it the most densely populated area on Earth at the time.

The 6.3 hectare (16 acre) island was packed with a school, swimming pool, open-air market, a hospital, small prison, and rooftop vegetable gardens/farms

Following the compromise in 2015, Japan's proposed industrial locations, including Hashima Island, were recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Ghostly pictures of Japan's Hashima Island, also known as Battleship Island, show dilapidated high rise buildings where thousands of mine workers once lived.

Creepy images show how toys were left behind in the ruins of the crumbling city when mining operations were ended

Frozen in time: A television set is among items left in one of the rooms in the crumbling buildings. The island was once the most densely populated city on earth.

The island has become popular tourist attraction over the years. But it has also been described as an 'evil place' by Chinese and Korean workers who say they were once forced to work there.

Imagine the level of technology advancement then, 47years ago is no joke, some buildings here in Nigeria that were even built 5 to 10years ago can't stand the test of time like the ones here that had been abandoned yet they still stand firm. Some houses will even collapsed befr they finished building it.

Over 200 workers died in accidents over the years. Others suffered from silicosis, a work-related lung disease.

The island has been abandoned since 1974 and is better known by locals as Gunkanjima (Battleship Island), because it looks like a hulking warship.
