Not many might know this; but as always, history always has a good way of reminding us that even in some of our most darkest times, some certain conditions can cause the rise of some uncertain and unlikely heroes to come to the rescue of people whom are being oppressed by an Oppressive force.

Not many might know who Usman Dan Fodio is, but for those who may not know about the man in question; Usman Dan Fodio (born on 15th December 154, Gobir - died 20 April 1817, Sokoto) was a renowned Fulani scholar, religious teacher, military leader, Revolutionary, Promoter of Sunni Islam and the core founder of the Sokoto Caliphate in Nigeria.

Not too many may know why this man's name rings a bell, but the few who know him can bear witness to the fact that he was indeed a great Warrior.

But according to historical records, Usman Dan Fodio was responsible for the fall of many empires in Old Nigeria; he was the one who put an end to the reigns of the Hausa Kings of Northern Nigeria; and he was also the reason why the mighty Oyo Empire fell.

Now when this man was done with carrying out a successful jihad in some parts of the Northern and the Western part of the country, he shifted his attention down to East.

BUT ONE OBA OF BENIN, PUT AN END TO THE RAGING ARMY OF USMAN DAN FODIO AND THAT OBA WAS NONE OTHER THAN OBA ESIGIE OF BENIN

This Oba (According to Historical sources) was recorded to have mobilized a massive army to face the invading Fulani Army of Usman Dan Fodio, even so that he was successful in the Battle that took place.

Many historians argue that Oba Esigie of Benin was the reason why Usman Dan Fodio's jihad was not successful in the Eastern part of the country.

It's important to note that some historians argue that if the Oba Esigie's army was defeated in the Battle he fought against the Fulani Army, Benin would have succumbed to the Jihad and other parts of Igbo land would have followed suit; ranging from the fact that the Igbo communities as of them were not as organized as the Benin Empire whom had a standing army and a well organized monarchy.

But Esigie and Usman Dan Fodio lived in different Centuries

Esigie Lived in the 15th Century and Usman Dan Fodio in the 19th

Truth is that the Egbira, Igala and Yorubas who shared Borders Northern with the Edo bore the brunt of the Fulani Attacks and successfully repulsed them though I do believe Benin may still have had some Skirmishes with Nupe fighters in the Kogi Area but even the Okun Yoruba of Kogi successfully resisted their attacks and are 90% Christian today

The Igala especially did a very Stoic job of keeping the Fulani Jihadists far away from the Niger Benue Confluence Area there is not a Single Emirate there

The TiV, Jukuns and Idoma did such a fantastic Job Fighting the Fulani Jihadists along the Benue in the East that the Igbos never even knew there was a Jihad going on because it never reached them ,anyway they already had their hands full dealing with Slave Traders

Dude, we should be careful what we post online. The OP was seriously wrong. Oba Adolo reigned from 1848 to 1888.
Oba Osemwende (1816-1848) was father of Oba Adolo.

The first real action of Oba Osemwende was the punitive action against Akure for rebellion in 1818.

Oba Ogbebo reigned in 1816 only and before him from 1804-1816 Oba Obanosa reigned. Only Oba Obanosa or Oba Akengbuda (1750 -1804) would have realistically possibly have had to repel Dan Fodio's jihadists considering that Fodio died in 1817.

Fodio wasn't even personally fighting in the last years of his life, if I remember his history correctly. Oba Ozolua historically had to repel Idah people from invading what is today called Edo North and Oba Esigie after him.

So you mean the Yoruba supreme being, the king of all Kings, the Ogane couldn't stop Dan Fodio from ransacking his kingdom and converting many of his people to Islam?

There is no record of an Oba of Benin fighting off Fulani jihadists. If there is, please, bring such records forward.

The closest that jihadists came to Benin was in the 1890s when the Nupe emirate of Bida under Emir Umaru Majigi, began infiltrating into Esanland from Afenmai. Some Esan communities, like Uromi, Ubiaja, Okhuessan Emu and Ewohimi formed the Akota Defence Alliance to fight off the jihadists from Bida. This was a local response - the Oba in Benin didn't get involved.

Long before the Fulani jihad started in northern Nigeria, down south through the middle belt, Benin Obas have personally stopped leading armies into wars for reasons I am not going to mention here. After this, all wars that Benin was involved in were fought by chiefs and Enigie who had standing armies who served at his majesty pleasure.

A great number of Esan served in Benin military and the general, chief Ezomo of Benin is said to be of Esan descent.

Esan people repelling off the Fulani jihadist would have been a natural thing for them to do, not necessarily waiting for instructions from Benin to protect their end of the Benin empire, just as the commanders and Benin army stationed in Lagos garrison in 1602 wouldn't have waited for instructions from Benin before fending off external aggression in Lagos and it's environments.

When the Lagos garrison sort the help of the Dutch ship to help bombard another Benin fortified garrison with cannons in 1602 because they rebelled against Benin, the Lagos commanders didn't wait for instructions from Benin.

Benin had military garrisons with stationed and residence armies at different strategic locations throughout the empire. These armies do what is necessary and report back to Benin.

Esan are descendants of Benin, so it makes no difference.

There is a statue of great Esan military general Eboghimwin in King's Square Benin City. Most Benin queens were from the Esan part of the empire.

There is no difference between Benin and Esan. Only an ignorant or mischievous person would think there is.

As far as the Benin empire was concerned, everything or actions were done or taken in the names of the various Obas by their subjects.

Except for few, the names of most individuals that played several roles are forgotten but the names of the Obas they served are remembered. Anything any individual or Edo subgroup did is or are recorded under the era of an Oba, in Benin history you can't separate the Oba from the people.

Benin never encountered fulani their armies were no match for the benins, their armys were still using swords and arrow with horses for warfare when benin already had canons guns, they bought

It would have been a walk over by the benins if the fulanis had encountered benin kingdom

Their empire was so weak it collapsed before the benin empire....

Speaking truth here, the benins encountered the igalas in 1600ad, way long before fulani ventured into hausa land,

They couldn't have encountered benins because the igalas and benue people stopped them in their land... And mission was abandon

Jesus Christ alone is the King of Kings

Ogedengbe was busy fighting for Independence for the Ijesha and Ekiti from Ibadan otherwise he would have been in a better Position to finish off the job he had started of taking over Benin

Please note that the Akure which Benin claim to have ruled were part of the Ekiti Parapo fighting for Independence from Ibadan in 1878

One or two kings paid tributes at certain point in time and that's why you're so happy? angry grin when your kingship itself is from ife. It's the ife who civilized and gave benin what it is. Infact benin is a yoruba word. Few yoruba kings paying tributes for a short period of time to their brother ain't bad. Infact yoruba kings paid tributes to one another as well. It's not giving what you think

The Fulanis only gained upperhand in ilorin because the Military Commander of the oyo armies literally rebelled against his king and got support of other yoruba armies to ally with the fulani and hausas and other Muslims to fight, unfortunately the Fulanis betrayed him and took over ilorin later on. When the Fulani-Yoruba ilorin tried to expand they were checked and beaten back by ibadan and allies at osogbo.

When your life is miserable and so concerned about false superiority one usually lacks logic and becomes so ignorant of history.
