The quality of your sleep at night directly affects your mental and physical health and how well you feel during the day. Sleep impacts your productivity, emotional balance, brain and heart health, immune functionality, creativity, vitality, and even weight. No other activity delivers so many benefits with so little effort like sleep. Without enough hours of restorative sleep, you won’t be able to work, learn, create, and communicate at a level even close to your true potential. Therefore, knowing how long you should sleep at your age is one way of addressing any sleep problems you're likely to encounter. Meanwhile, enough hours of restorative sleep boosts your energy, efficiency, and your overall health will go up. In fact, you’ll likely get much more done during the day than if you were skimping on shuteye and trying to work longer. This review specifically looks at how long you should sleep at your age. Elderly People over 60years Based on recent studies, the elderly should be in bed before12’oclock every night. 7 – 8 hours of good sleep should be enough at night. According to data released, elderly people whose sleep is less than 7 hours per night can cause dementia and also increase the level of memory impairment in the elderly. Long-term sleep for more than 7 hours or lack of sleep can also lead to poor concentration or even Alzheimer’s disease. The most common sleep problems among the elderly are dreaminess and insomnia. Experts suggest that elderly people should make it a habit of taking a nap for about 1 hour daily especially if they experienced a poor night of sleep. Otherwise, the central nervous system of the brain will be slowly affected and the blood flow will be relatively truncated thereby making the body's metabolism decelerate. Adults between 30-60 years. According to the data, adult men need between 7-9 hours of sleep daily. It is also recommended that the ideal timeframe of sleep should be between 10 pm and 5 am during which they can easily reach a deep sleep state at this time. For people in this age bracket, sleep helps mostly to relieve fatigue. For adults, getting less than seven hours of sleep a night on a regular basis has been linked with poor health, including weight gain, having a body mass index of 30 or higher, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and depression. Experts remind that the sleep environment of this age bracket needs to be conducive, the sleep environment should be without noise or interference, properly ventilated, and must have proper shading. People within this age bracket are advised to choose a well-elevated mattress and a moderately hard pillow. Adolescents between 13-29 years. Adolescents of this age are expected to have about 8-10 hours of night sleep. At this age, they must follow the principles of going to bed early and getting up early to ensure that they enter deep sleep around 3 o’clock at night. They must also try not to sleep late on weekends. Sleeping too long can disrupt the body’s biological clock, cause mental depression, and affect memory and eating disorders. Young people are more accustomed to staying up late, which will directly affect their mental state the next day, and easily cause skin damage, acne, and other skin-related problems. More so, staying up late for a long time may also affect the endocrine system and mental states. Therefore, the most important thing for young people of this age is to regulate their lives. Children aged 1 - 3years Children within this age bracket are required to sleep about 12 hours a day. The specific sleep time can be determined according to their own sleep habits. For example, some babies are accustomed to sleeping at noon or late in the afternoon. Babies of this age are prone to have their sleep frequently interrupted because they are too excited to play. Sometimes, they enter a state of sleep, but their brains are still active such as grinding their teeth or kicking the quilt. These will affect the baby’s brain and body development. Therefore, it is recommended that Parents give them a warm bath 1 hour before bedtime to relax their whole bodies. For kids of this age bracket, getting the recommended amount of sleep on a regular basis is linked to better health, including improved attention, behavior, learning, and memory, the ability to control emotions, quality of life, and mental and physical health. Babies under 1years old Babies under 1-year-old need the most sleep time. On average, babies in this age bracket should have about 16 hours of sleep. Sleep at this stage is a very important period for their growth and development. Therefore, Sleep time must be guaranteed. Most infant sleep problems are caused by calcium deficiency, fright during the day, and digestive disorders. In some cases, children can’t sleep well at night because they sleep too much during the day. So Parents should pay attention to calcium supplementation for their children. It is also necessary to ensure that the baby’s sleep at night is complete. It is not advisable to frequently feed or change diapers at night especially in the second half of the night In conclusion, Sleep needs vary from person to person and are often affected by a number of factors. It is important to pay attention to how you feel during the day to determine whether you’re getting the right amount of sleep for your body. However, if you’re sleeping enough, you should feel awake and energized during the day. If you find you’re sluggish or often tired, you may need to sleep more. To make the most out of bedtime, create good habits, such as minimizing your caffeine and alcohol intake, following a regular sleep schedule, and creating a comfortable sleeping environment with the right mattresses and bedding to reinvigorate you for a more productive day. Hmm, I only sleep for 4hrs daily. I can't sleep during the day no matter how hard I try and I've gotten used to it even though it affects me greatly. There is no rest for me in this life, perhaps the next. |
