The Anambra gubernatorial election has been the talking point of Nigeria's politics for several months now. The polity has been heated due to the calibre of the contestants, the defection games and the threat of boycotting the election by IPOB.

There have been a lot of jamboree regarding the campaigns both online and offline.

The candidate of the Accord Party, Dr. Godwin Maduka however, stands out for me.
The man is relatively new on the political scene but he managed to pull attention online.
He received numerous awards from different bodies and he was constantly in the news.
Our very own AlexxReports stood by him all through the campaign and his moniker was very active on this forum.

However, the election has come and gone, and results are trickling in from the nook and crannies of the state.
From early results, Godwin Maduka has so far had an abyssmal performance.

What lessons can you learn from this man's story?
I like Godwin Maduka. He is an Igbo man who was born into poverty, struggled to educate himself, qualified as a medical Doctor, opened his own Hospitals in the USA and became a billionaire

He moved to turn his town into a mini-wonderland and built one of the biggest hospitals in Nigeria there.

His mistake is getting involved in Nigerian politics. He hoped and prayed to be the APGA candidate in Anambra, but when he learnt that Obiano preferred Soludo, rather than stop there, he jumped from APGA, to PDP to Accord

In Nigeria, it is not possible to become the Governor of any state in Nigeria unless you belong to PDP or APC, Anambra is the only exception with APGA

Nigerian politics messed him up as it has done many good men.

Maduka a good candidate in wrong party.
PDP shot itself in the foot by not giving him ticket.

Dr. Maduka did a lot of things wrong:

1. He does not seem to understand the immediate needs of Anambra people. He was talking about 21 Campuses, police stations, etc.

2. He resorted to distributing fuel to Keke and Okada riders. Our people are only loyal to the point where the freebies stop.

3. He keeps harping on his philanthropy. Ifeanyi Uba, Obiora Okonkwor and many Anambra wealthy folks are philanthropists.
It is nothing new neither will it get you elected. He thought he was campaigning to beggars. He misinterpreted pecuniary interests for love. The people chanting "Okosisi" are hoping to go home with something. There is no love in that equation.

4. His personality is fully separated from his stellar credentials. People thought he would be a breathe of fresh air. But the triple professor(think of how absurd that sounds to the common sense) acted and sounded more like a roadside mechanic. A triple professor who has lived in US for more than 40 years should be able to articulate his plans to the people. It was sad watching Ozigbo and Soludo have him for lunch. When you listen to his speech, one cannot help but wonder the quality of US educational system.

5. He surrounded himself with poor people who would never tell him the truth. They kept massaging his ego for pieces of the pie. Most people in his political entourage look like beggars--no party heavyweights around unless he pays for them. Pathetic!

6. Igbo people are very emotional. He failed to tap into that emotion. He tactfully avoided statements on Nnamdi Kanu, Fulani herdsmen, and other issues that are of immediate concern to Igbo people. He appeared more clueless than ever. It is understandable since he has been getting closer to the Central government by building Police college, Police Station, SARS units, etc. So there is this internal fight for loyalty to his conscience, Igbo people or FG.

7. Money is like a loaded gun. If not used correctly, it can be dangerous to the bearer. He just learned the hard way.

People would rather trust the devil they know, rather than the angel they don't know.

Andy vs Maduka

He has done everything aright. Gaining political relevance is not a day job. What he should concentrate after the election is to solidify his presence in Accord, use his influence to strengthen the party structure in the state. Then begin a state wide grassroots connectivity using his NGO focusing on youth and women

Soludo and Maduka are two powerful candidates loved by their people.
Problem I think is that both came to the stage at the same time just like Ronaldo and Messi always coming head to head.

If Maduka can join forces with Soludo now, maybe he could have an agreement with Anambra people, continue his good works and perhaps recontest in 8 years time , ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL.

You have raised a very pertinent question and unlike many who have nothing to say but to turn every discussion to tribal bashing.

There are some criteria required if you want to excel in political turf in Nigeria.

Be ruthless. Nigeria politics is not for nice man, neither it is for gentleman but for a strong willed person. It is not equally for intellectual because the more educated you are the more refine you become as you may consider some actions in politics as stupid.

Calculative moves. It is very useless in Nigeria to think charity and donation to massess would give you a political win, what that does is to give you popularity that would attract some vocal praise singers but irrelevant strata of people to your side. Sadly attracting such people would place you against the political elites of the society

Popular party. Regardless of your popularity, you need a very strong political platform in order to win popular vote. The case of president Buhari who lost 3 national election before becoming president is a good reference here.

Emotional stability. This would be a very eye opener to many of our Igbo brothers especially on Nairaland who have been sentimental in their political analysis, some of them look at politics as mere arithmetic exercise rather than accepting it as a complex calculus. Politics requires you to exploit your strong point rather than focusing on your opponent weaknesses. In Nigeria, such weaknesses doesn't matter when it comes to chosing their leader. The electorates are shortsighted and rely on pecuniary gain in making political decision.

Your eligible voters are your market space, your product must reach them, the very poor and uneducated people of the society are the one that takes voting serious while others are just online noisemakers who doesn't believe that their participation could change the narratives for better
Nice analysis

He needs to be calming down and study politics 101

Pay your dues
Get ticket from a well structured party
Connect with the right political people
Be observant and willing to learn
Don't do I too know

The lesson...is suffer no dey tire black man...we are made for suffering...the moment suffering cease to exist we become irritable, we start causing trouble, we start talking tough, we start nurturing vices, we start giving birth to battalion, we start marrying many wives. Same time would happen in 2023..well as for me and my family we don escape suffering na security we dey find..make people wey dey exchange hope with whatever continue. My children can never be only Nigerian at worst they will have 2 citizenship at best 3 to 5.

You hit the nail straight into the medulla oblangata!
As for Dr. Maduka, he should regard this as his first attempt and the money he spent as an investment to be recouped hopefully in 4-12 years. But he must get his calculations right next time. A "weak" party can't take you anywhere in naija election. Also, you must spend wisely and don't just come on the eve of the election to start your campaign. The bottom line, though, is playing the gentleman in naija politics is totally useless - you must pursue your goal with ruthless determination as your opponents. When you succeed you gather pastors or imams to pray to God for you, hoping that God will forgive all the thuggery, killings and terrible atrocities you masterminded.

Anambra does not do money politics is the lesson learnt , th poorest of the contestant and a former unversity don won an election contested by billionaires , Anambra electorate voted human capital above money capital
but Maduka impacted more privately in Anambra compared to Soludo. I think because of the deep rooted APGA structure in Anambra na why because of he was APGA flag bearer he would have won with a landslide. People still voting party over individuals smh

The lesson is simple.

If you want to win election in Nigeria, make sure you are contesting under the most popular and trending party in that state or region or nation.
