Osinbajo: To Address Inequalities, Social Benefits And Profits Can Co-Exist by TheRareGem1(op): 5:27am On Nov 10, 2021
In the face of inequalities in wealth and opportunity worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, impact investing – an approach that integrates society’s social and environmental goals, can no longer be ignored, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

Osinbajo made the observation in a keynote speech delivered virtually at the 4th Impact Investors’ Foundation Annual Convening on Impact Investing.

According to the Vice President, “glaring inequalities of wealth and opportunity in the face of poverty, misery and social alienation in any society is asking for trouble. Such a situation is neither sustainable nor wise.

“The sharp drop in standards of living caused by COVID-19-induced shocks to the economy have not only further deepened existing inequalities, but pushed many more into extreme poverty.

“Neither governments nor businesses can afford to ignore the huge social disparities and environmental deterioration for long.

“So, impact investing is an eminently sound approach to balancing these inequities by catalyzing social and environmental impact for long-term structural change.”

He explained that “profit and sound social and environmental benefits can co-exist and governments can be facilitators of impact investment.”

Continuing, Prof. Osinbajo noted that “but because the logic of the profit motive as being the driver of innovation, wealth creation and growth is unassailable, the real question is how to ensure that it accommodates a moral compass.”

Advocating the growth of impact investing in Nigeria, the VP further explained that “a more sustainable business model is intentionally building into the profit making objective, the means of attaining society’s social and environmental goals. The notion of doing well by doing good, or harnessing the forces of innovation, entrepreneurship, private capital to achieve both profit and social and environmental good.”

“Some of the current models of impact investing we are seeing are not only inspiring but also point in the general direction that policy and regulation should go,” the Vice President added.

Citing examples in both public and private sectors, the VP noted that “there is an opportunity for collaborative thinking between government, the impact investing community and other stakeholders on policy and regulations.”

The VP cited the example of a digital agriculture company, Farmcrowdy which has “a platform that allows individuals to securely invest in farms online, enabling them to participate in agriculture indirectly.

“The other is Andela, the highly successful technology company that recruits and trains local software engineers at little or no cost, who in turn work remotely for them in various global companies, thereby generating good paying jobs for thousands of young people.”

The FDI & PPP are key tools for economic prosperity, however, insecurity remain the main challenge, if we can win the war against insurgency, and other social vices, we are go to go because this is affecting a lot of Nigerians, farmers are unable to go farm, people are afraid to travel because the road is unsafe.

Mention any (past) vice president that is normal or any debuty governor by that is a active in Nigeria. Some people don't even know the name of debuty Governor in thier state.

The last time I saw debuty Governor of Rivers state was during election. Wike have been doing everything.. even commissioner are just useless as Buhari in rivers state.

So don't blame Osinbanjo, na do Nigeria politics dey work.

I don’t always take this man serious. I’ve not seen any sensible thing he has done in this country. Always coming out to make stupid comments about nonfunctional policies.
He better follow his fellow failure master home come 2023.

After reading all this, I couldn't help wondering why people like the VP and Governor Ayade speak a lot of meaningless English, then go to bed, without doing anything.

TheRareGem1:
The FDI & PPP are key tools for economic prosperity, however, insecurity remain the main challenge, if we can win the war against insurgency, and other social vices, we are go to go because this is affecting a lot of Nigerians, farmers are unable to go farm, people are afraid to travel because the road is unsafe.
This is the VP's aide's attempt to interpret the speech. Meanwhile, they both ended up talking about entirely different things.

I can't also help recalling Buhari's first campaign townhall meeting at Lagos in 2014 where he said that "building roads will stimulate production of brake pads to create employment..." or something of that nature. It was easy to see the man did not know zilch about running an economy.

I am beginning to get the same vibes from the VP.

How about Atiku Abubakar under President Obasanjo? Does that ring a bell?

VPs can be active, please.

very sad.
these politicians no care about anybody. I have discovered that this current dispensation has some northern youngsters on their payroll and the only job they do is distort the truth and quell any alarm raised against this regime. from intimidation people using the agencies and paying dummies to protest against protesters to paying clueless fools to muddy any topic that indicts or exposes them.
many FTC are dummies planted by this government to sit on the first pages of any topic and throw mud on any revealing truth.
for example, the first to comment guy, see how he deflected the issue to put the blame on the insurgency. As if before insurgency the country had a headway.
corruption has been the bedrock of our government and the reason for any insurgency is as a result of poor leadership and corruption orchestrated by the president himself.
Osibanjo is not a good man. He went in there and showed his true color. Acting in the shadow but exacerbating the problem. Wealth inequality cannot be fixed without jobs.
It is so easy to create jobs. charge every state to urban development and put the money in the economy. simply provide power and jobs will surface automatically.

For 3 years now my cousin has not been able to renew his passport. He lost a good job offer in the U.K because he could not travel with an expired passport. The Nigerian embassy in Qatar has failed to renew his passport. Imagine a whole embassy without a simple machine to print passports. Nigerians there would have to seek a visa and flight ticket to The UAE or go back home to Nigeria to renew their passport.
My cousin has been photographed since June this year hoping to receive his passport sooner but nothing yet.
A lot of Nigerians are suffering and losing opportunities for no good reason. Please, someone should alert the responsible people in the embassy that many Nigerians are languishing. And, when you call the embassy, they sound very rude and intimidating.
You will also be surprised that foreigners are the workers in the Nigerian embassy. According to my source, there are Indians, Kenyans, and an Arab lady running the show in the Nigerian embassy in Qatar while Nigerians are jobless and working odd jobs to settle their bills.

Please push this forward to save ordinary Nigerians
