2022 WCQ : Super Eagles Arrive Lagos, Gear Up For Cape Verde Test

The Super Eagles have arrived Lagos following Saturday’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture against the Lone Star of Liberia, reports Completesports.com.

Gernot Rohr’s charges won the encounter 2-0 at Grand Stade de Tangier with Victor Osimhen and Kelechi Iheanacho scoring the goals.

The team’s arrival was announced via Super Eagles Facebook page.

“We have landed Lagos, Nigeria safely via chartered AIR PEACE AIRLINE, “reads the message.

The Super Eagles will take on the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde in their final group game on Tuesday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

Nigeria top the group on 12 points, two points more than closest rivals Cape Verde, who had to come from behind to beat Central African Republic 2-1 at home Saturday.

The Eagles will advance to the knockout round of the World Cup qualifying tournament should they win or draw with the Blue Sharks.

Nigeria with average players will be forming over-confindence against smaller team and end up being shocked. I hope we dont see that version of Nigeria players in this crucial match.

Don't know why CAF adopted this Play-off format after Group matches.
It may likely not produce Africa's 5 strongest representatives.
There is a fair chance of Senegal drawing DRC & getting knocked off because any error can prove very costly in the 2-way tie. Even error from Referee especially since no VAR.

Proper thing would have been a preliminary knock-out to eliminate weaker teams & produce 20. The subsequent leaders of the 5 groups of 4 will then directly qualify for World Cup.
Errors in group matches are not always very costly & strongest teams often recover to still top the group.
At the end, you are better guaranteed that the 5 strongest teams qualify.

That's how it's done in Europe & other continents. Playoffs are for possible qualification of 2nd placed teams.

Very possible, in recent games we have lost to CAR, Sierra Leone [ 4-4 draw was a loss angry] and that loss to Madagascar at Afcon,

‘Cape Verde’s Dream Is Still Alive’ — Stopira Boasts Ahead Nigeria Clash

Cape Verde left-back, Lanique Dos Santos Tavares – a.k.a. Stopira, says that the Blue Sharks’ ‘dream is still alive’ as regards toppling the Super Eagles to win the Group C of the 2022 FIFA World Cup African qualifiers and advancing to the Final Round, Completesports.com reports.

Super Eagles will host the Blue Sharks in their last Group C match at the Teslim Balogun Stadium on Tueday needing at least a draw to win the group, while an outright win is a result the visitors must achieve to realise their dream.

Nigeria presently top the group on 12 points while Cape Verde are second on 10 points. Central African Republic and Liberia are third and fourth, on four and three points respectively.

Stopira, 33, boasts extra motivation ahead of the decider in Lagos after scoring Cape Verde’s winner in the 2-1 victory at home against CAR, more so in his landmark 50th cap for his country.

Julio Tavares scored for Cape Verde in the 51st minute to make it 1-1 after CAR’s Isaac Ngoma silenced the home fans with an 11th minute goal. Stopira scored the winner on 75 minutes.

The left-back who plays for Hungarian top division side, Fehervar FC, took to his Instagram page afterwards to post a mission statement ahead of the Blue Sharks’ trip to Nigeria.

“10 Islands, 1 Nation, 1 Dream.. The dream is still alive,” Stopira’s Instagram post reads.

Before the Blue Sharks dinner on Saturday after their win against CAR, the Cape Verde Football Federation honored Stopira on his 50 international games with a plaque and a jersey depicting the historic milestone in the player’s career.

One of the youngest players of Blue Sharks, Gilson Tavares, was given the privilege of presenting the commorative 50-game plague to Stopira.

Blue Sharks captain, Marco Soares, and the coach, Bubista, spoke and congratulated Stopira on his remarkable record so far as Cape Verde international.

Nigeria vs Cape Verde: Rohr reveals decision on Ighalo

Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has said Odion Ighalo will play some part in their final 2022 World Cup qualifying group match against Cape Verde Islands on Tuesday.

Nigeria need to avoid defeat to book a spot in the final play-off round.

Rohr’s men currently lead Group C with 12 points, with Cape Verde two points behind in second place.

Ighalo, who recently came out of international retirement, did not make the matchday squad against Liberia on Saturday but he is now in contention for Tuesday’s game.

“In this department Ighalo can help us very much. We have wonderful goalscorers, Osimhen, Kelechi who can score.

“I don’t know if he will start the game or not. We will make a decision after the training tomorrow morning but Ighalo will help us.

“He can score every moment, each situation he’s able because he’s very clever to score a goal,” Rohr said in a press conference on Monday.
