How Dangerous Is The Use Of Mobile Phones And POS In Filling Stations? by flemsy15(m): 9:44pm On Dec 15, 2021
Please Tech masters in the building; I was just wondering... We are advised not to use mobile phones in filling stations as it may result to a fire outbreak. But POS are widely used in the same filling stations. In my little knowledge, they both use sim cards and I guess they use the same way to transmit and receive signals... just guessing. Why is POS not prohibited in Filling stations too. Please I need clarification from someone who can give.
Thanks

Honestly, I wonder too. Even mobile phones. I can't quite remember, but I've see a sign dissuading the use of phones at filling stations and I wonder why everyone acts like it is normal.

HOLY SHIT

4 me, using POS isn't dangerous. Some POS uses internet not the same signal as during phone conversation. So I think if you can browse with a phone in a filling station, then you can use POS in filling station. Just an opinion( I don't really know much about these stuffs.)

I'm so glad this time finally came

As early as 2000, it has been debunked that using mobile phones in filling station is not a fire hazard, but for some reason Nigerians go crazy when you receive a phone call near the pump.

I am yet to hear of a fire caused by POS use. POS machines emit the same radiation as mobile phones

The idea behind this myth is that - if you use a phone in a filling station, it can fall down, and if it falls down, the battery can fall off, and if the battery can fall of, the metallic side can touch fuel and then a spark.and an explosion...

There are a lot of if's in this theory and the chances of it happening is practically zero.

However the idea has survived and it has become normal to put no cellphone sign.

Are you sure? Always thought it's a signal issue with receiving or making calls

Inside fuel depots you can also spot the "no phone" warning post. So definitely not a good idea making calls close to a leaked fuel pump. OP You can try it yourself and come back with a result.

My question is simple, why is the use of POS not banned too

I also thought it's issues with signals which is why I'm confused why POS is not banned too in filling stations

A lot of 'IF'. I think it's not just normal, it's a compulsory just like 'No Smoking' signs

There's this programme on Discovery Channel back in the day ( I don't know if it's still running) called Myth Busters.

Those guys tested a cell phone in a fuel station and nothing happened.

They even did different variations of the test. Like, using the fuel pump and allowing the phone to ring close to it, and also answering calls and more.

In their closing remark, they just wrote,in very bold letters on the screen "MYTH BUSTED".
