Syrian air defences were activated after the country's principal port city of Latakia came under a missile attack, which sparked a major fire resulting in significant damage to the port, Syria’s state media reported.

The attack took place around 3:21 a.m local time [01:21 GMT] on Tuesday, with rockets being launched from the “depth of the Mediterranean”, SANA’s news agency reported.

Footage posted online shows a series of blasts rocking what appears to be the port.

Flames can be seen engulfing the port and lighting up the night skies in another clip from the scene.

The port has reportedly sustained "great" material damage in the strike. “A number of containers” were burned down as the result of the attack, SANA reported.

There have been no reports of casualties.

The airstrike comes exactly three weeks after the port was subject to a similar attack, which Damascus also blamed on Tel Aviv. At that time, several missiles hit the port in an overnight raid, igniting fire in the container area.

The Latakia Governorate is also home to a major Russian military facility, the Khmeimim Air Base, located some 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) southeast of the provincial capital.

The raid comes as tensions flare up between Damascus and Tel Aviv. Earlier on Monday, the Syrian government accused Israel of “unprecedented escalation” after the Israeli government gave the green light to the $317 million settlement plan in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Under the plan, the number of Jewish settlers in the area is set to double over the next five years. Damascus, which condemned the planned expansion as a “blatant violation" of international law, sees the Golan Heights as part of its sovereign territory under the UN Security Council resolutions.

You mistake US magnanimity to propping up Israel and it's belligerent behaviour to mean the tiny Israel is brave, it is brave as far as the US allows it to be!

Bros forget Israel �� is good and by good i mean GOOD. Maybe America gave them a springboard but the people have soared so high.

Their tech is top notch, their scientist are good. Israeli PM (or a high profile officer can't be exact) once said "Israel has more influence in the middle east than the US can imagine"

America won't be foolish to involve with them if they were a bunch of jokers and failures mind you. I have reasons to believe they are involved actively with US military gadgets development, like their new kit 300

Israel is an apartheid state with the backing of European countries and American. America most especially.

Well we can't have an absolute conclusion to this but like I said, if the people are bunch of jokers the US won't associate with them. US spend large amounts there cos a result is guaranteed.

And talking about apartheid, the jews suffered a lot and I believed it shaped their current perception to life.

Most sensible groups (by this i mean ethnicity, tribe or nation) would do all it can never to be humiliated twice.

South Korea know their neighbors have Nukes , whenever you see someone misbehaving it is either they have a solid force behind their back or they have nukes. Israel is being propped up, the moment those who prop it up stop, they will recover their senses and behave responsibly!

We are talking about Israel actions in this thread not Iran, not Palestine, you brought up SKorea, I pointed out why they would rather have a peaceful arrangement with their belligerent neighbor. I explained once again, the only reason Israel behaves the way it does is because US has incetivise their hostile behaviour.
