So south east use to shout and play high tunes when they sing? grin... Well, South east music is versatile and it's for everybody, they don't stick to one genre. That's one thing I love about it.
All the talks about the SE being the behind is just pure propaganda and promotions.

SE in the mainstream is doing just as good.

This list made the front page, some days ago and I I will insert the region of origin. The SE have more representation. Going down the list, they even dominate even way more.

These Nigerian songs are currently in the top 10 list of all time as of 31st of December 2021.

1. Burna Boy - On The Low [242 million] 2018 SS

2. Davido - Fall [227 million views] 2017 SW

3 Sinach - Way Maker [189 million] 2015 SE

4. Ckay ft Joeboy & Kuami Eugene - Love Nwantiti [174 million] 2020 SE

5. Burna Boy - Ye [171 million] 2018 SS

6. Tekno - Pana [170 million] 2016 SE

7. Wizkid - Joro [168 million] 2019 SW

8. Ckay - Love Nwantiti (Acoustic) [144 million] 2020 SE

9. Davido - If [142 million] 2017 SW

10. Yemi Alade - Johnny [140 million] 2014 SW/SE

The SE also even have great üpromise for the future. So many young talents going mainstream in the future.

The babies likes of Guchi (Jennifer, Benzema, scatter my head), Fave (Baby Riddim), Jaywillz (Medicine) AV(Maybe be Delta though) (Big thug boys), Salle (with the promotion), Dai verse (Your body/Cocaine), Singah (no longer up and coming though) are going to even shake things up more next year. They are all SEs. I am not even talking about established up and coming stars.

To the topic, the people of the SS who will do great even in the mainstream from the SS are Omah lay, 1da ton, Ajebo hustlers. I like what they are doing from the PH blocks. This is where Burna came from too.

The Benin blocks are also churning out stars. The likes of Rema, and that his former partner is doing great.

Where is that Viktor guy that did rap in Ishan?
Where is Sugarboy the Akwa-ibom guy too?

Buju (Akwa-Ibom) is doing great too.

The SS igboid have some advantages though. they can be hot within SS, nationally or within the SE. Look at how Mercy Chinwo revived her career by embracing the SE style.

What is Igbo or Yoruba music? Like Flavour? Phyno? is it language or style? umu Obili Igbo?
If it is Igbo music, Flavour have been the face of this style of Music and Igbo music is even way more mainstream than any other traditional music. In fact, it is way way ahead, in terms of the mainstream. I think if language and style is the criteria, Igbo gospel leads.

What constitutes Yoruba music? is it Fuji? or 9ice? What is the representation?

However, you also know that population plays a role. If you stick to your native style, then your audience might be limited. However, some styles are universal too. If you use your language, the song must be good enough for others to embrace. You must consider your population. Do you have the population to blow you to a national or regional star status? The SE and SW have this privilege.

In the SS, Igbos and Igboids there have the advantage because they can switch and follow the SS bandwagon. If the song is good, even if they use an Igbo or Igboid dialect and singing in traditional song they gain gain great success from the SE audience who will then spread it everywhere. An example is an Abavo woman (Iron lady) from Delta, she was one of the most successful example because even though she used an Igboid non-mainstream dialect, people could understand her very well and had major success in the SE.

Yeah, It was a big omission... I mean there are so so many.

I am glad that many people are coming back to invest to keep the talents in the SE and hunt for talent there. Some group of guys are planning to pump crazy money inside the entertainment sector o. One of them is Mallam Figo eNTERTAINMENT: They are currently collaborating with stars. The SE movie industry is losing its prominence and the talents are leaving for Lagos. They need to keep those talents within the SE.
They are also investing in the music industry. One problem I have with the East based Eastern talent is that many of them who are into Afro and mainstream music like rap. e.g Kolaboy, etc. We need more of the likes of Singah, Guchi, Victony, Ckay etc. You do not all have to be Phyno.

With these other complementary styles, the Igbo rappers can now thrive. Apart from Phyno. the next mainstream Igbo rapper is blaqbones and he does not rap in Igbo.
