Nonybb:The problem is not even generation, because currently we generate about 12522MW but only able to dispatch 4000MW |

TheRareGem1:From the little I no, nigerians dont enjoy up to 5000mw of electricity. That 5000mw is grossly inadequate for the needs of 200m people when smaller countries are generating and distributing more than 10,000mw. So for u to be celebrating 700mw which will cost the country $1.3b in the midst of darkness is just mind-blowing |

Nonybb:A 15GW dam would take many decades and billions of dollars to complete. Money, Nigeria does not have. Also, it would require a very large current of water. I doubt the River Niger can power such a turbine. Already, we are pacifying our neighbours to not dam the River Niger in exchange for supplying them electricity. Since we have Gas in abundance, we should focus on several small to medium scale gas plants while attempting modest hydro power projects like this. Even this 700MW dam is taking nearly a decade and half to complete. Nigeria's power problem is terrible because successive governments have embezzled all the investments meant for the power sector since after independence. This, coupled with an exponential population growth and power demand, means that our energy crisis will be at the very least another two to three decade long problem. |

Upon all of this power projects everywhere still yet there will be no constant electric light in nigeria... make the power sector a competitive sector fully privatized....or remove the electric power from the exclusive list to the current lists... |

joey150:won’t construction of gas supply pipelines from gas plants to all the gas turbines across the country be the biggest challenge ? Also why are successive administrations comfortable with the power situation? Why was rail prioritized over power ? |

Moorish:1. We already have a basic regional gas supply pipelines. Besides, it wouldn't take more than a year or two to lay gas pipelines to the site of the power stations if the government was indeed serious to solve gas shortages to power plants. 2. Nigeria isn't run in the best interest of Nigerians. This part is very self explanatory. 3. It's easier to show off rail lines than power plants whose construction will probably outlive your tenure. The Nigerian government isn't built to serve the Nigerian people. It is simply an organised criminal agency established to embezzle petrodollars, hoodwink its citizens, take out humongous loans and pay salaries to an ineffective and bloated civil service. |

It's highly likely that this project will be completed, simply because it is being built by Chinese firms using Chinese capital (hence no room for the usual Nigerian factor of corruption and incompetence). However, it will make no different whatsoever to the power situation for Nigerians, because for many years now, the problem of power in Nigeria has not been an issue of generation, but of distribution and pricing. Nigeria already has something like 3 times the amount of generating capacity than the power distributed on an average, but the rickety, underfunded national grid can't distribute the full amount which can be generated, while the discos can't recover their costs thanks to price controls, so most of that generating capacity just sits idle. Adding yet another generating source does nothing to fix these distribution and pricing issues, so anyone jubilating with the expectation that things will soon change is simply giving in to delusion. |

joey150:I agree with your points but I think Based on how well you seem to know Nigeria’s ailment, you might have some ideas on how we can get better so we can be hopeful for the next 10,20years I am Nigerian and have chosen to live here rather than the northern hemisphere countries where I spent quite some time. So we die here. Is there any hope on the horizon ? Or do you think there’s nothing to be hopeful about the next two decades ? Or even forever ? Are you one of those who feels disintegration is the only solution ? |

omohayek:So why will the Nigerian government embark on adding this power plant if the power generated cannot be transmitted ? Don’t you think they know that the Grid needs an expansion/upgrade ? |

Moorish:I am glad we share the same opinion. I think Nigeria as a country is built and ran on a structurally parasitic framework. Our system of governance and government just isn't built to succeed. A system that isn't enshrined on accountability, fair democracy and merit will show little to no growth. Not to dilly dally any further, we must get leadership right. Ideas and vision mean nothing without the men and women to sacrifice and fight for them. Our current system of governance discourages merit, citizen participation in governance and accountability. If we don't fix these issues, nothing else would work. But first of all, we need to get the right people in the right leadership positions. I believe that if we fix our election system, make it more transparent, that we may stand a chance at redemption. Like you, I've lived outside Nigeria, and know how sane societies are run. We are a long, long, way. Even if we started to do all the right things tomorrow, we would another two to three decades to right our many wrongs since independence. As for disintegration, I don't think it'll change much. We are curently too underdeveloped to break into parts. However, we can benefit more from fiscal federalism and then move towards disintegration when we are a more developed nation. However hopeless the situation seems, we must remain hopeful and continue to try. |

Moorish:Since when has competence and rational planning been a hallmark of Nigerian governments, especially this one under Buhari? This pointless new plant is no more nonsensical than the same Buhari government going out to borrow billions in USD from the Chinese to build railways it is now running at a loss, or refusing to privatize anything whatsoever while complaining about inadequate revenues, or squandering billions on petrol subsidies and "turn around maintenance" on obselete refineries while lecturing Nigerians about the "evils" of importation and begging international agencies for new loans ... This particular venture into stupidity is a drop in the bucket considering all that has gone before it. |
