AFCON 2021: Real reason referee Janny Sikazwe stopped Tunisia vs Mali early

Janny Sikazwe, the referee at the centre of the controversy at the end of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations match between Tunisia and Mali on Wednesday, was suffering from heat stroke and severe dehydration.

It has been revealed that Sikazwe was taken to hospital after the game.

Tunisia have appealed for their Group F opening fixture to be replayed, after Sikazwe blew the final whistle after just 85 minutes and then again 17 seconds before 90 minutes were up.

Mali eventually won the encounter 1-0.

AFCON’s head of referees, Essam Abdel-Fatah, has now come out to defend the performance of Sikazwe, claiming he was suffering from the effects of the 34-degree heat level and 65 percent humidity in Limbe, Cameroon.

“The referee suffered from heat stroke and very severe dehydration, which led to him losing focus and was taken to the hospital.

“It caused him to lose time in the 80th minute, and he ended the match in the 85th minute. He returned after directions from the assistant staff and then returned to finish the match in the 89th minute.

“When the crisis occurred and the objections and control were lost in the match, the fourth referee was the one who was going to complete the match [instead of Sikazwe], but one of the two teams refused,” Abdel-Fatah told MBC Egypt’s Al-Laib.

If he was having such condition, he would have called the attention of the officials and paused the game so he would be changed rather than what he did.

This is a very lame excuse. Why did he insist on ending the match despite protests from Tunisia, when he could have been replaced by the reserve referee? The man get mental problem. Simple.

Meantime Tunisia na thief for asking for a full replay of match that was stopped at 89mins49secs. Highest na to arrange 4or5 mins injury time make them complete the match.

Oh! I'm not buying this. CAF and FIFA rules support refrees substitution just like players. If dehydrated, water and energy drinks are there to rescue. I learnt this isn't his first or second time in this kind of controversies. The man needs to be examined medically.

Is that why he gave Tunisia a penalty and sent off a Malian??

How would those two actions have helped Mali??

How many African countries have you lived in?? While in Maiduguri back in the days, people collapsed during extremely hot weather conditions, and there were cases of some who died. I don't know where you heard that crap.

If truly he is surfering from that.. Why did the players refuse the next referee to conclude d match?

Africa and stubbornness na 5 n 6..

So if to say na around 35 minutes the referee begin surfer from heat stroke, that match for just conclude for first half, abi?

In premier league football if such occur they bring in another referee no matter how many minutes they pause the game and give them additional minute.. Why is African things always different?

Thank God the "black man" doesn't lead the world otherwise the world would have been a mess.

The Black Man has failed in every aspect of developments.

Reasons many Nairalanders failed to agree on a common voice to take over leadership positions from the baboons in charge of the country.

They'll rather come here and fight one-another because of the failures at the helms of the nation's affairs.

Let's start calling a spade a spade irrespective of ethnic or religious beliefs.

An Igbo, Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba, Itshekiri, etc man should be ready to talk truth to anybody in charge without connection sentiments if the black truly wants development.

Thoughts of a CHAMPION

Heatwave is not really an easy situation... Many in Nigeria won't understand because I assume we are used to that kind of temperature... That thing dey kill oyibo people easily,... The referee might not be really used to that kind of humidity embarassed
