In 1959, the AKM was introduced, featuring a stamped receiver, making it both easier to manufacture and lighter by about 2 pounds. If you’ll note, that groove above the magazine is now an indent. Further, the AKM featured an angled muzzle device, and a changed stock shape.

AK74


In 1974 the AK74 was introduced, firing 5.45x39 instead of 7.62x39. The stock now has a groove, and there is an improved muzzle device. Additionally, the magazine, while still curved, is straighter than the 7.62x39 mags. They were also slightly modified so that you could not stick an AK74 mag in an AKM or AK47.

Now, there are a plethora of AK pattern weapons available worldwide. However, most versions are derivatives of either the AKM or the AK74.
