The thugs claimed to be students of LASU under the banner of Muslim Student Society and were protesting at the court premises over what they claimed was Gani's harassment of Tinubu. The thugs became violent and began stoning Gani .

Gani never saw the case to its end as he was later diagnosed with cancer and died a few months later.
