Some people like destroyers like makalele, kante, etc while some prefer creators, deep lying playmakers. Pirlo, busquet, jorginho, xabi etc. Intelligence over brutish force. The former are used for conservative defensive systems while the latter are used for expressive attacking systems.

Jorginho is even becoming something of a hybrid now that he's improving tremendously in the "defensive aspects". Functioning well in a 2 man midfield. Most of those playmakers do appear frail but what they lack in physicality, they more than make up for it with other aspects. They evade pressure quite well. Using half turns and or passes. And all are paired with good midfielders by their side complementing them.

Makalele had lampard, busquet had xavi, iniesta, pirlo had vidal, Pogba etc. No player is an island. A functional system plays to each players strengths and masks deficiencies.
