88 is such a long time ago! You are definitely from the "old school". My first nation cup I remember watching was Algiers 90. Naija lost first game to Algeria 3-0 I believe. And the whole of Naija wanted Clemens Westerhof's head. We made it to the final and marginally lost to Algeria. Our football was hot that period. Made it to the finals in 84, 88 and 90.

I don't agree with you that it's divination or black magic though. It's proper preparation. Look at all the Egyptian players at this year's Afcon. All of them wore a "bra" that was collecting data about each players physical state during the match. They harvest that data and analyse it to stay on top of each players physical condition. Given that data, they can strategise on when to substitute a player or switch him to a different role.

If you look at the so-called juju the Egyptian keeper used, it's just an analysis of each Senegalese player and where they placed their last 10 penalty kicks. The goalkeeper glanced at it and made a decision to dive in the direction where the player played most of their kicks. That's the power of data and insight. The entire team had done their homework including video analysis. It's not juju. It's Data. Specifically Predictive or Forecast data given historical antecedent.
