Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan insisted on Monday his country “won’t give up” on its relations with either Russia or Ukraine, but says it will implement an international convention that allows Turkey to shut down the straits at the entrance of the Black Sea to the warships of “belligerent countries.”

The 1936 Montreux Convention gives Turkey the right to bar warships from using the Dardanelles and the Bosporus during wartime.

Ukraine has asked Turkey to implement the treaty and bar access to Russian warships.

Several Russian ships have already sailed through the straits to the Black Sea in the past weeks and it was not clear how much of an impact Turkey’s decision to close down the straits would have on the conflict.

The convention, also provides an exception for Black Sea vessels returning to port.

Turkey has criticized Russia’s military aggression in Ukraine, but has also been trying to balance its close ties to Ukraine with its interests in not upsetting its fragile economic relationship with Russia.

There are many video even by Ukrainians displaying Russia soldiers avoiding civilians and moving away. If Russia is in warring, those Ukrainians would have been counting their corpse in thousands.

Turkey can only block Russian access to the black sea if Turkey is at war and even then, they can't block Russian ships from going home. They can block then going out though.

And Turkey is not at war

NATO/US pressured Turkey to restrict access to Russian ships. Instead, Erdogan restricted access to ALL ships, meaning even NATO and EU ships can not enter the black sea to help ukraine with supply.

Russian war ships already in black sea would remain, meaning Russia would continue to be in control of Ukrainian black sea borders; they just won't be able to leave yet, as per the new restriction. Its a diplomatic WIN WIN for Turkey.

Closing it for Warships, Commercial can go through.

When it comes to the Montreux agreement right of passage is guaranteed and Ankara deals directly with Moscow (and every other black sea nation) for passage of military vessels and it's only in extraordinary circumstances that Turkey can block the bosphorus and Dardanelles which will means closing off the Black sea and the Mamarra sea from the Agean and subsequently blocking access to the Mediterranean.

It will affect trade as well

But apart from this I don't think it can stop Russian war ships from returning to base after all this Ukraine drama

Closing the Turkish strait has serious economic implications but all who needs it for access will suffer not just Russia

This Ukrainian war.
Even though I don't support bombing people in thier own country. But this war serves some people right.
A company in Nigeria that wants to start a telecom company got us to spend a lot of money to demonstrate that we can build them a robust system for running their services. They acted like doubting Thomases they are, thinking that no Nigerian company can make the system for them.
Despite the demo of the complete the system we spent a lot to build for them, they went ahead to to give some Ukrainians almost $100k to build it, giving us nothing.
Now there is war in Ukraine, my internal source told me that they could not even reach the Ukrainians now.
Serves them right 

I like Russian troops, they so much respect the right of civilians and other vulnerable even in war time, God bless Putin
