Russia is concerned with the unity being formed by some of it's neighbors with the western union.

With these countries being part of the western union, Russia power is being tamed. With all the weapons in there possession, they cannot afford to go to war in fear of sanction that could crippled their economy.

Right now their targeting of Ukraine seems to be a quest of land grabbing. They are targeting areas that will aid Russia productivity. These areas serve as major link to the rest of the world (through ocean) and a source of radioactive materials that can be explored for other purposes.
It makes perfect sense because if Ukraine is going to make alies with Russian enemies, Russia don't want to lose those areas or else they will be cut out from the rest of the world if they get sanctioned in the future.
