There's nothing like local govt autonomy in Nigeria.

State govs are emperors.

They wield a lot of powers and arrogatd even more powers to themselves.
LGAs will become autonomous when their allocations are given directly until when it goes through the governors. It will work if the federal executive is serious about it.

The government getting closer to the people. Election will become a more serious affair and we can easily identify who is chopping our money.

So how will granting them full autonomy address this problem? undecided I do not have anything against them being autonomous but if it means that the citizens won't get value,to what extent then will the autonomy benefit the citizens?
I think this autonomy must be tied with some minimum obligations and efcc should have an operational office in all the 774 LGAs to provide regular updates on their utilization of the funds.
They will not be afraid to be apron of governors. No government should be able to dissolve them...

LGAs don't deserve full autonomy because most of its chairmen lack common sense. You hardly see an LGA chairman who lives in the area they chair. It's just like a governor living in another state. Now, that begs the question: what's the essence of having an LGA chairman?
When State governor had crippled them. They can't spend money as they like. It is what is given to them by governor they spend. Since OBJ left they've been appendage of governors all over the federation becaut their allocation goes directly to state government's account.

Good news, no more care taker chairman

That's why it must be about stakeholders. If certain conditions like minimum of 10 years residency, business ownership ,land or property ownership etc .are put in place, we won't have those that don't have stakes in the community vying for elective post. LG is the simplest way for the grassroots to access governance

The autonomy should be about the LG or FG organising the election not state. Godfatherism common in political parties would be curtail if independent candidates are allowed to contest too
This is very apt.....

In Bayelsa state, it can be as worse as the LG Chairman staying in Port Harcourt, River state and comes to Bayelsa every last days of the month to pay salaries to ghost and absentee workers like him then return to PH.

Next month, the cycle repeats.
The same with kings, living outside their kingdom

Okay. That is true but I am referring you back to the issue of absenteeism we both agreed is the lot of these our LGAs.
How does this autonomy address that problem sir?

Good development....why will LG chairman stay when Mr Governor has taken over his JOB...but now they will stay...and do their work...

Bayelsa is the biggest disaster in Nigeria. Small State, Huge Resources/Allocation = Zero Development!
Sorry if u re from bayalsa.

Bayalsa probably being small but also has at least 98.5% stack illiterates for the population so that's what u get in such places.

If not insecurities and Fulani herdsmen, Buhari would have been the best.

That's not an excuse, sir. If you don't find the area you chair worthy to live in, you have no business being their chairman or chairperson.

BTW, I am not saying that funding LGAs through state governors is right. However, there should be a law that compels them to live and work in their LGAs.

How on earth will you feel the pains of the people when you don't live in their midst?

Good development if you ask me. But I just hope the LG will take good care of the Primary Schools in their LGA. I remember in the past when Primary School Teachers were owed salaries. It was a bad experience then. No landlord was prepared to let their houses for school teachers.

My brother every state has their woes. The fact is we need more laws to ensure accountability and delivery on the job.

At first I was upset with these amendments but now I can see the benefit. It makes alot of sense
The 8th Senate also tried for the amendment but it was killed by the state.
Most of these amendment were listed and supposed to have been done but all killed during voting.

They should stop state govt from conducting local government elections and their tenure should be the same as that of states and federal with election conducted same time. That is what autonomy means not what they are doin over there

The Governors will end up rejecting it. Especially as elections are close
After it has passed?

The electorates should be resolute on who rules them...Not someone sitting in Budillion to write who will govern in Alimosho......

Oh! So the reason they and their workers are always absent until month end pay days year in year out is because someome wrote down their names yet the one who appointed or recommended them resumes work daily ? huh

Never mind again sir. Thank you very much for your time sir.

INEC should also conduct local government elections so governors would not have power to decide who becomes local government chairman
