President Putin "would rather decimate Ukraine than have it in the Western camp" says the BBC's Frank Gardner.

He told BBC Breakfast, the Russians had so far held back some of their worst weapons but "the gloves are going to come off" in the "second phase" of the invasion.

"The difficult balancing act for the West is how to push Putin far enough to punish him for this, to stop this war, but not push him so far that he lashes out and does something really horrendous."

Gardner said it was unlikely there was anyone close to Putin advising caution.

He said Putin had spent the past two years during the pandemic closeted with advisors planning this attack.

Putin "has concentrated power in his hands. No-one is talking to him," Gardner warned.

In your dream. After uncle sam nuked Japan it's over 70 years now Japan has moved on. America is their surest ally till today. What Russia needs to do is unseat this comedian president and install a pro-russian president. You think all Ukrainians love Zelensky the comedian? This war was avoidable if the clown of a president was able to use his head instead being a western puppet reasons why many Ukrainians won't forgive that.

One thing I know is Ukraine's NATO or EU ambition is dead for now. Zelensky the comedian can keep entertaining us by still pushing for membership of both.

The Nazi backed govt in Ukraine has to fall. Zelensky the clown will run into exile at last. Russia will be the only one to decide the future of Ukraine not the Zelensky comedian or West.

I don't even know if he is a jew. But the Nazis pushing and giving the comedian support will destroy him. Ukraine will fall and he'll be granted assylum in any of the neighbouring NATO countries.
